Vermont: Leading the Nation in Safety

Vermont has been ranked as the safest state in the U.S. for 2025. Despite recent minor crimes, such as a woman attempting to smuggle turtles across the Canadian border and a suspected arson at Senator Bernie Sanders' office, Vermont excels in several safety metrics.
The state boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates at 2.1 percent and has one of the top rates of job growth.
Additionally, Vermont has the lowest share of seriously underwater mortgages and the second-fewest personal bankruptcies per capita. The state's well-maintained roads and low occurrence of traffic fatalities further contribute to its top ranking.

New Hampshire: A Close Second

Neighboring New Hampshire secured the second spot in the safety rankings. The state performed well across various metrics, including low rates of assaults per capita and minimal losses from climate disasters per capita.
New Hampshire's strong performance in these areas highlights its reported commitment to maintaining a safe environment for its residents.

Other New England States in the Top Ten

The remaining New England states also earned spots in the top ten safest states. This regional trend highlights the collective emphasis on safety and well-being in the northeastern part of the United States.
Factors contributing to these rankings include low crime rates, strong financial safety indicators and effective emergency preparedness measures.
New York ranked 24th in the safety survey, indicating room for improvement in various safety metrics. While the state has made strides in certain areas, challenges remain in aspects such as personal and residential safety, financial stability, and road safety.
"Addressing these issues could enhance New York's standing in future safety assessments," a demographer pointed out on X.

Maine

Maine earns the third spot with its impressively low crime rates and emphasis on community policing.
Known for its peaceful towns and safe roads, Maine continues to provide a high quality of life for its residents.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts ranks fourth due to its robust healthcare system and comprehensive emergency preparedness plans.
The state also boasts low workplace injury rates and an excellent track record in disaster response, keeping its residents safe and secure.

Utah: Strong Workplace Safety Standards

Utah takes fifth place, shining in workplace safety and job market stability.
The state has a strong economy with low unemployment rates and comprehensive occupational health regulations that protect its workforce.

Hawaii

Hawaii ranks sixth, combining its stunning landscapes with effective public safety measures.
The state has a low crime rate and strong environmental protections, ensuring a peaceful lifestyle for its residents and tourists alike.

Connecticut

Connecticut secures the seventh spot with its stringent traffic laws and public awareness campaigns.
The state's low rate of traffic fatalities and well-maintained roads contribute to its ranking as a leader in road safety.

Minnesota: 'Comprehensive Safety Initiatives'

Minnesota ranks eighth, excelling in areas like community engagement and emergency services.
The state's focus on education, public health and crime prevention creates a secure and thriving environment for residents.

Rhode Island: Financial and Personal Security

Rhode Island ranks ninth with its strong financial safety metrics, including low unemployment and high median incomes.
The state also has effective measures to combat fraud and enhance personal security.

Wyoming

Wyoming rounds out the top ten, with its low population density contributing to minimal crime rates.

When combined with the majestic scenery and the state's focus on community well-being and environmental safety, Wyoming ensures it remains a secure place to live and work.

Internet access and reliability remain an ongoing issue within the state despite its safety.
