While we’d all love red carpets to be filled with stunning fashion-forward looks and perfectly tailored suits, the truth is that most red carpets are a bit of a mixed bag. Sure, some looks might be absolutely stunning, worthy of even getting a repost on Instagram, but others might leave fans upset or scratching their heads.
In 2024, celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Emily Blunt and Emma Stone have all rocked looks on red carpets that weren’t unanimously loved. After all, it’s hard to forget our reaction to seeing Kardashian walk up the Met Gala steps in a gorgeous silver gown and a gray sweater on top.
“It’s the wildest night of my life in a garden,” Kardashian explained to Vogue of her unexpected look. “I just ran out and grabbed my boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on and had to get to work.” Yeah, we didn’t totally get that either…

After all, while she looked beautiful, and her waist was so cinched it was kind of unbelievable, everyone kept asking themselves, “Why did she wear the sweater on top?”
Explaining it to Vogue, Kardashian said the ensemble represented “the wildest night of my life in a garden,” and after her fun romp, she grabbed her “boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on and had to get to work. And my hair’s all messed up.”

Jennifer Lopez looked like her usual stunning self at the 2024 Met Gala in this bedazzled Schiaparelli gown. But, considering she was one of the night’s star-studded hosts, fans were expecting more.
“Not that I had high expectations for her, but as co-chair, I was kind of excited to see her use this theme and have a bit of a moment but this is the same exact silhouette and glam we see on her constantly. I’m just so sad about it 😪,” wrote one fan on Instagram. “Stunning dress but starting to think either I don’t understand the theme or none of these ppl do 😂,” wrote another.

“I know that people are going to do flowers, but my flower of choice is the most-used flower. And it’s cotton,” she told Entertainment Tonight on her look. “I wanted to do a white T-shirt, also because a white T-shirt is timeless. And it felt very poetic to choose this.”
Online, fans had different reactions. “I don’t hate it!!! it’s her, it’s costumey, it’s on theme!” wrote one user. “She still thinks that this is shocking,” wrote another. “No mama, it’s just bad taste and ridiculousness.”

For many fans, Emily Blunt’s Schiaparelli look at the 2024 Oscars was quite a disappointment, so much so that even Blunt’s stylist had to defend the look. The dress, which featured structured floating shoulders, also had silver sequins in the shape of underwear.
“WHY ???????? Seriously why 😢,” wrote one user on Instagram. “She is so beautiful but the details that outline underwear are not flattering.”
Some rare fans, however, looked this out-of-the-box look on her. “I LOVE THIS!!” wrote another commenter. “finally a good look for her!! i dont understand the hate in the comments. This look is so different for her, so fashion forward. LOVE.”

Emma Stone, who ended up taking the Best Actress Oscar that night, also raised some eyebrows with her look. The mint green color, the peplum and the dress malfunction when she won her award were all up for criticism.
“Design is ok but let’s be frank: that color make her look like she is wearing a tablecloth,” wrote one user on Instagram. “The color is stunning and makeup and hair are great wish the bottom was just a fit and flat or ball gown,” wrote another. “The peplum feels very 2014.”

Anya Taylor-Joy got quite a lot of people riled up when she wore this white custom Christian Dior gown and matching headscarf to the Dune: Part Two premiere in February. While some praised the actress for the elegant and minimalistic look, others accused the look of attempting to “cosplay as Muslim women,” per The Independent.
