The San Francisco 49ers made one trade on the NFL's trade deadline day, acquiring defensive tackle Khalil Davis from the Houston Texans for a seventh-round pick.

However, that wasn't the only defensive addition the team made on Tuesday.

Following the NFL's trade deadline Tuesday afternoon, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the 49ers were bringing back veteran safety Tashaun Gipson and signing him to the practice squad.

Gipson was with the 49ers during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Now, he's back with the team for the stretch run in 2024.

Gipson, 34, began his career back in 2012 with the Cleveland Browns. He was with the Browns from 2012-15, and earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2014 when he had six interceptions and eight pass deflections.

Gipson was then with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2016-18, and spent the 2019 season with the Houston Texans. From 2020-21, Gipson was with the Chicago Bears. Then, he appeared in 33 games with the 49ers over the last two seasons.

Over the last two years in San Francisco, Gipson has accumulated 121 tackles, six interceptions, and 11 pass deflections. In 2022, he had a breakout year as the 49ers' starting free safety, securing five interceptions and eight pass deflections.

Gipson is now returning to San Francisco, where he'll start on the practice squad. With Talanoa Hufanga currently on injured reserve, it makes sense for the 49ers to add secondary depth.

Gipson is very familiar with the 49ers system, so it shouldn't be too difficult for him to fit into the team's scheme. It remains to be seen when he's elevated, but the team could elect to bring him up for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 49ers are 4-4 and coming off a bye week. They got a much-needed win against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8, and will look to keep the momentum going out of the bye.

The 49ers added Davis and Gipson, and are also expecting star running back Christian McCaffrey to return potentially as soon as this week. The 49ers opened McCaffrey's practice window this week, and they'll see if he's ready to return to action on Sunday.
