‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘The Wild Robot,’ and ‘Music by John Williams’ Win at the 2025 CAS Awards

“A Complete Unknown,” “The Wild Robot” (which has been sweeping the guild and honorary society awards), and “Music by John Williams” were the live action, animation, and documentary winners at the 61st CAS Awards, held February 22 at the Beverly Hilton.

For TV, the Cinema Audio Society of sound mixers awarded “Masters of the Air,” “Shōgun,” and “The Bear” in the categories of non-theatrical/limited series, one-hour, and half-hour.

As previously announced, director Denis Villeneuve (“Dune: Part Two,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival”) received the CAS Filmmaker Award and multi-award-winning sound mixer Tod A. Maitland CAS (“A Complete Unknown,” “West Side Story,” “Joker”) was honored with the CAS Career Achievement Award.

The CAS sound mixing win for “A Complete Unknown” is the first Oscar indicator for Best Sound; in four out of the last five years the CAS winner has matched the Oscar winner. Now we wait for the MPSE Golden Reel Awards to pick its sound editing winners this weekend for dialogue/ADR, effects/foley work, and music editing.

‘The Wild Robot’Universal Pictures

“A Complete Unknown’s” sound team, led by Maitland, pushed James Mangold’s musical Bob Dylan biopic toward early ’60s authenticity. The many musical performances (in clubs, at the Newport Folk Festival, and in recording studios) were done primarily live on set at the insistence of Best Actor nominee Timothée Chalamet, who spent five years preparing for the part. The 22-minute Newport segment was shot from beginning to end with 20 mics.
