“Jason Statham Becomes One of the Most Reliable Action Stars of the 2020s” might not have been on anyone’s bingo card of film industry predictions at the end of 2019, but it appears to be shaping out that way.
The “Transporter” star has enjoyed a career renaissance in recent years, leading the 2023 shark sequel “Meg 2: The Trench” to nearly $400 million at the global box office before teaming up with David Ayer for the ridiculous (and ridiculously fun) action thriller “The Beekeeper.” Now, Amazon MGM hopes that the pairing of Ayer and Statham can produce even more box office gold after with reunion movie “A Working Man.”
Adapted from veteran comic book writer Chuck Dixon’s 2014 novel “Levon’s Trade,” “A Working Man” is co-written by Ayer and Sylvester Stallone. With those kinds of legacy connections to the action genre on both sides of the camera, it should come as a surprise to no one that the film follows a special ops veteran who is forced to come out of retirement to save a young woman who falls into unimaginable danger.
An official synopsis for the film reads, “Levon Cade left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life working construction. But when his boss’s daughter, who is like family to him, is taken by human traffickers, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined.”
In addition to Statham, “A Working Man” stars Jason Flemyng, Merab Ninidze, Maximilian Osinski, Cokey Falkow, Noemi Gonzalez, Arianna Rivas, Emmett J. Scanlan, and Eve Mauro, with Michael Peña and David Harbour. Statham, Ayer, and Stallone serve as executive producers alongside Chris Long, John Friedberg, Bill Block, and Kevin King Templeton.
Ayer continues to keep a busy schedule, and will next direct the survival thriller “In the Heart of the Beast” for Paramount, with Damien Chazelle attached as an executive producer. He also remains attached to direct his long-developing remake of “The Dirty Dozen.”
An Amazon MGM release, “A Working Man” opens nationwide on Friday, March 28. Watch the trailer below.
