Ads on ChatGPT for free tier could soon become reality: Here’s what we know

ChatGPT has made a mark in the market by emerging as an AI model that is being used by multiple people. As of now, the free version of the same is also ad-free but OpenAI is all set to change the same. In a recent report published by the Financial Times, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar had not completely ruled out the possibility of showing ads to all the free-tier GPT users.

However, the top boss has also said that OpenAI has a lot of concerns to address before doing the same. The main reason behind the same is that the company wants to increase their profit generation from the AI model because of the high costs incurred due to continuous running of AI servers. Currently, OpenAI stand at a valuation of $150 billion and it has been said that they burned around $5 billion this year in AI training.

Ads on ChatGPT for free tier users

Unlike the subscription model on the platform that only charges the people who purchase it, the ad slots will make sure that the company is able to make revenue through the free users as well. According to the latest stats suggested by Backlino, there are around 200 million weekly active users of ChatGPT out of which 10 million are from the paid tier. That makes up only five percent of the total users.

This clearly means that OpenAI will have a scope of making money with the 90% of the total active users with the ads. And the platform will also have to consider the competition before introducing ads. We are seeing a lot of players in the AI tools market trying to make their mark with exemplary tools. Nonetheless, that is not going to happen anytime soon. So, until then, the free-tiers users can enjoy the ad-free experience of the AI tool.
