It’s tiiiiiiiime!
Happy December, everyone! We’re just over three weeks away from Christmas Day, and Mariah Carey has come out of hibernation.
The pop singer and songwriter, 55, is – once again – climbing back up the charts with her enduring holiday classic, All I Want for Christmas is You.
But all this talk of who Mariah wants for Christmas got us thinking: Who would be the last person on Earth that Mariah would want to find under the tree?
The We Belong Together hitmaker has had a few feuds and disagreements over the years, so we looked back at them to see who might ruin Christmas 2024 for her.
We’ve got US Presidents, rival female vocalists, mouthy male rap stars, and gossipy reporters. Sorry, Mariah! Hope none of them come over for dinner this year!
Jennifer Lopez
Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez have been embroiled in a feud since roughly the late 1990s, when Jennifer signed a record deal with record executive Tommy Mottola.
It seems harmless on the surface, sure, but Tommy was Mariah’s ex-husband, with the pair having been married between 1993 and 1998.
Apparently things turned so bad between them that their ongoing cold war inspired Mariah’s famous ‘I don’t know her’ line from an interview in 2008.
Mariah had been asked a question about Jennifer, also 55, during the interview, and the Hero singer’s expression became an instant internet meme.
It’s not known for sure how the two are getting on these days, but in Mariah’s own words, in her memoir The Meaning of Mariah, things probably aren’t great.
‘Much of what went wrong led back to Tommy. He was angry about the divorce and my departure from Sony, and he used all his power and connections to punish me.’
Eminem
Where do we start with this one? A bit of he-said she-said over an alleged relationship between Marshall Mathers and Mariah Carey eventually boiled over.
Eminem claimed they’d had relations and threatened to release evidence, while Mariah continually denied it. They referenced their argument in several songs and diss tracks over the years.
Then Mariah’s ex-husband, Nick Cannon, was dragged into the feud more than a decade after things had apparently quietened down. And three years after Nick and Mariah’s divorce.
Slim Shady dropped an anti-Nick diss verse in 2019, on a track titled Lord Above, and Nick responded in kind with a song of his own, called The Invitation.
In 2020, Nick told Billboard: ‘I always give Eminem his props as an icon in hip hop. I think he knows better now. If he keeps talking about me, I’m gonna keep talking back.’
Donald Trump
While Mariah Carey hasn’t been the loudest political voice in pop over the last 20 years, she hasn’t exactly hidden her allegiances either.
In 2016 she supported Hillary Clinton – and her husband, former President Bill – in her campaign against eventual election winner Donald Trump.
And just before Christmas in 2023, she threw her support behind sitting President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris by visiting the Oval Office.
She posted on Instagram: ‘Last week I had the pleasure of meeting President Biden & Vice President Harris at the White House to ring in the holiday season!
‘While there, we got to see all the festive decorations and spread some cheer!’ So we can’t imagine she’d be as cheery if Donald and Melania came round for Christmas dinner.
Ryan Seacrest
If you watch American TV at all, you’ll know exactly who Ryan Seacrest is – the man’s face and voice are absolutely everywhere, all over the country.
On New Year’s Eve in 2016, he hosted the long-running variety show Dick Clarke’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, which featured Mariah Carey as a musical guest that night.
However, things didn’t quite go to plan, with Mariah unable to hear her band or her backing vocalists, which affected her performance significantly.
Mariah blamed technical issues and decided not to sing during the latter half of the performance, but Ryan Seacrest defended the technical crew.
When the pair met on a red carpet 18 months later, Ryan asked Mariah about her New Year’s Eve disaster, to which Mariah responded: ‘Well, can we not get into past moments?’
It seems they patched things up in later years, but we’d be surprised if Ryan was on Mariah’s Christmas card list going into December this year.
Demi Lovato
Mariah Carey and Demi Lovato seemed to coexist quite happily until around 2016, when Demi reportedly had choice words to say about Mariah’s backstage reputation.
When an Instagram account called The Art of Shade referred to Ariana Grande as a ‘low rent version’ of Mariah, Demi had something to say.
‘You got it the wrong way around, honey!’ the former Camp Rock star shot back. ‘Extremely talented? Yes. Superhuman? Possibly. Unnecessarily rude? Absolutely.’
When Mariah’s fans headed to Demi’s page in droves, the This Is Me singer simply said: ‘This is why I posted what I did… The woman is mean for no reason.’
So we guess Demi and Mariah will aim to avoid each other if they want their future Christmas gatherings to go smoothly. Eeek!
Madonna
They get on better these days, but 30 years ago Mariah Carey and Madonna weren’t exactly the best of friends.
Madge and Mimi were two of the biggest names in pop in the 1990s, but they couldn’t have been more unlike each other at the time.
In fact, Madonna even said she’d rather ‘kill herself’ than be anything like Mariah. We like to think that she’s calmed down over the years.
And, eventually, Mariah shot back in 1995 with a jab of her own, saying: ‘I really haven’t paid attention to Madonna since I was in seventh or eighth grade, when she used to be popular.’
Ouch!
The Kardashians
While she hasn’t publicly confirmed a dislike of The Kardashians, several comments from Mariah Carey down the years indicate that they’re not her cup of tea.
In 2016, she was asked about everything Kim, Kendall, and Kris, and her response indicated that she definitely wasn’t ‘Keeping Up’ with them.
‘Some of us talk about other people and what they do and la la la,’ she began. ‘But I’m not that person.’
A year before, she’d said in another interview: ‘Some people’s goal is to be famous, not to have a craft or an art that they’re famous for.
‘Today, you can be famous just from being on a reality show, doing – well, you don’t really have to do much, but you kind of have to do a lot.’
