She remembered how she and her family, like many others, had tuned in to watch the 1979 Academy Awards ceremony.

They supported her father Jon Voight, who ended up winning Best Actor for Coming Home.

"My mum was home with two little kids," Jolie shared with Matlin, "My mum's dream was to be an actor."

Bertrand, also an actress, had put her career on the backburner to raise her children with Voight. She only appeared in three projects: Ironside (1971), Lookin' to Get Out (1982), and The Man Who Loved Women (1983).

"She was in her twenties, because she had me when she was very young. She was divorced to a very famous man and she was home with her babies in an apartment watching him win an Oscar with the other woman," the 49-year-old said.

The pair had separated in 1976, publicly citing Voight's adultery as the cause, thought their divorce was not finalised until 1980.

The "other woman" in question was actress Stacey Pickren, Voight's date to the star-studded affair.

"It was kind of just a part of our family history," Jolie said, "I remember thinking that [Bertrand] was there for me and my brother and that was the choice she made. And how she must have felt on that night always really stuck with me."

So when she won her own first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Girl, Interrupted, she knew exactly who it should really go to.

"To have that moment, to get off that stage and call her and say, 'It's yours' – and I gave it to her – one of the best moments of my life."

In her acceptance speech, she again referenced her mother and her influence on the actress' career.

She said Bertrand "had to give up her dreams of a creative life, but she embraced that side of mine.

"My mother would write letters to my characters – 'Dear Gia,' 'Dear Lisa Rowe, 'Dear Lara Croft' … I try to imagine sometimes now what she would write."

Bertrand died in 2007 after a nearly eight-year battle with ovarian and breast cancer at age 56.

Jolie is currently starring as opera diva Maria Callas, in the eponymous Maria.
