Anna Kendrick reveals she was in a seven-year 'abusive' relationship: 'My life completely upside down'

4 weeks ago 9

Anna Kendrick has spoken candidly about experiencing "abuse" in a long-term seven-year relationship with an unnamed ex.

The actress and Pitch Perfect star, 39, appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast this week when she spoke about filming the psychological drama and thriller Alice, Darling, which came out in 2022 and was about emotional abuse.

Kendrick began by explaining that she didn't tell those closest to her that she was making a film about emotional abuse as she "had just gotten out of a relationship that was extremely similar to the movie".

"I didn't tell anybody in my life... I didn't tell my therapist or closest friends that I was making this movie about emotional abuse as I had just gotten out of a relationship that was extremely similar to the movie," she said.

"And I didn't want anybody to tell me to not do it or get talked out of it."

Kendrick said that her and her ex were together for seven years but it was like an "overnight switch".

"It didn't follow the traditional pattern which is kind of yet another reason why I was finding it really difficult to identify and name it as abusive," she said.

"I was, like, reading all the articles and going, 'This doesn't look... like, some of it looks like how they're describing it, but not completely'."

"The relationship was seven years but It was like an overnight switch … that went on for about a year. So it didn't follow that more traditional, like, it's like a frog in boiling water thing where it started slow."

"It came out of absolutely nowhere, but was built on this foundation of I had so much love and trust for that person, so I thought it had to be me."

Kendrick said the pair went to therapy and she was convinced it was all her fault and that she was "crazy".

"Like, if one of us is crazy, it must be me. So it was very, very difficult to actually go, 'No, I think this is him. I think this is his stuff'. I turned my life completely upside down trying to fix whatever was wrong with me," she said.

"Things ended pretty quickly after that."

It comes after Kendrick said she's happily a "childless cat lady" when talking to The Flow Space in a new interview.

She spoke about her decision to not have children and told the publication she thinks the load of parenthood falls mostly on the backs of mothers and it's one reason why she doesn't want to go down that path.
