Anne Hathaway Reunites with ‘The Idea of You’ Director Michael Showalter for Thriller ‘Verity’

Anne Hathaway is continuing her literary adaptation empire at Amazon MGM Studios. And this time, Hathaway is swapping rom-coms for psychosexual thrillers, bringing Colleen Hoover‘s “Verity” to the screen.

Hathaway reunites with her “The Idea of You” director Michael Showalter for the feature, which is written by “The Act” and “A Friend of the Family” creator Nick Antosca.

“Verity” centers on struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, who agrees to complete the remaining books in a successful series that bestselling thriller author Verity Crawford is unable to finish after a mysterious accident. Hathaway will play the reclusive titular Verity, whose latest unfinished manuscript includes chilling admissions about Verity and her family’s past. Per the logline, Lowen has to determine if Verity is a gifted fictionist or deranged psychopath.

No other casting has been announced yet for the roles of Lowen and Verity Crawford’s husband Jeremy Crawford.

Unlike streaming hit “The Idea of You,” though, “Verity” is confirmed to be landing a theatrical release.

“Verity” will be produced by Semi-Formal Productions’ Showalter and Jordana Mollick and Somewhere Pictures’ Hathaway. Eat the Cat’s Antosca and Alex Hedlund, plus Heartbones Entertainment’s Hoover and Shiny Penny Stacey Sher, also produce. Heartbones’ Lauren Levine will executive produce. Showalter’s Semi-Formal Productions’ first-look film deal with Amazon MGM.

Showalter and Amazon MGM also have the upcoming holiday comedy “Oh. What. Fun.” in the works, with Michelle Pfeiffer starring.

Author Hoover, whose “It Ends With Us” was recently adapted to the screen with Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni starring, self-published “Verity” in 2018. The book was later acquired by Grand Central Publishing in 2021 and became a bestseller.

Hoover’s novel “Regretting You” is also getting the big screen treatment with Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, and Dave Franco starring.

In addition to “Verity,” Hathaway will lead David Lowery’s other thriller “Mother Mary,” James Gray’s “Paper Tiger,” and Christopher Nolan’s yet-untitled upcoming feature. She is also rumored to be reprising her role of Andy Sachs in a “Devil Wears Prada” sequel and is producing “The Princess Diaries 3.” Hathaway has not yet been announced to be back as Mia Thermopolis in the third installment, though.
