Anya Taylor-Joy Returns to TV with Crime Drama ‘Lucky’ from EP Reese Witherspoon

Anya Taylor-Joy is about to get Lucky — so is Apple TV+, for that matter.

The Apple streaming service has acquired the rights to “Lucky,” a new limited series that will star Taylor-Joy and be executive produced by Reese Witherspoon‘s Hello Sunshine banner.

“Lucky” is based on a New York Times-bestselling novel — and an entry in Reese’s Book Club — by Marissa Stapley. It tells the story of a young woman who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past. So that’s Taylor-Joy’s mission.

Jonathan Tropper, who was behind “See” for Apple Studios, and Cassie Pappas, who works on Apple’s “Silo,” are co-showrunning “Lucky,” with Tropper writing and executive producing. Witherspoon will also executive produce alongside Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, and Taylor-Joy will EP through her production banner LadyKiller.

“Hello Sunshine continues to do a fantastic job of championing women’s voices and I’m thrilled to be joining the team alongside Jonathan, Cassie and Apple TV+ to bring ‘Lucky’ to life,” Taylor-Joy said in a statement.

Since 2020 when Taylor-Joy made her A-List turn with Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit,” the actress has stuck largely to film — appearing most recently in “Furiosa,” as well as “The Northman,” “The Menu,” and “Last Night in Soho” — though she had a stint on “Peaky Blinders” in 2022. Taylor-Joy is also working with Apple on her next project, leading an action film called “The Gorge” from director Scott Derrickson.

Hello Sunshine also has a long relationship with Apple between “The Morning Show,” “The Last Thing He Told Me,” and “Surface,” which will release its second season in 2025 and just began production.
