Electric drying racks have become a popular solution to expensive tumble-dryer bills and for drying clothes faster during the wet months when traditional clotheslines aren't feasible. But are they really worth buying?
While some have pointed out that they are cheaper to run than other appliances and others note they can be less effective depending on the make and model, laundry expert Matthew Harrison has shared his expertise on whether investing in a heated drying rack is worth it and what the pros and cons of owning one are.

Zoe Cripps)A heated airer is an appliance most commonly used to dry laundry indoors, so it can come in particularly handy during the cold winter months. They usually resemble an average drying rack but work more efficiently by heating the bars, ensuring that your clothes dry faster. You can also invest in models that have a tent-like cover that traps heat to dry clothes that much faster.
For instance, there's this pick from Lakeland that our Style Director, Michelle, bought for her own home. She's been raving about her Lakeland heated airer, saying: "I rushed to buy this heated airer a few months ago as I work from home and wanted to save on my heating. I've set it up next to my desk, so it warms the room while drying my never-ending laundry pile - working mum life at its finest. I couldn't be happier and have noticed a difference in my energy bill."
You can shop for the exact same model for the reduced price of £245 here.
The main advantages of a heated dryer are to be expected. The expert notes that they are more convenient, as they can be used indoors, making them a great drying solution for all seasons. Whether there is rain, snow, or a thick layer of frost, you can dry your laundry within the safety of your home without waiting days for a sunny, dry spell.
Heated airers are also more eco-friendly, using less electricity and producing fewer carbon emissions than tumble dryers. And they're more energy efficient, with a smaller running cost. Although they will require electricity to reach maximum drying potential, they use far less than a tumble dryer and can save you a lot of money on energy bills.
They're a great drying option for small or busy homes, as they're more flexible and can be moved from room to room and folded up when not in use. Plus, they don't emit noise, making them ideal for those who sleep irregularly or have kids.
That said, they dry somewhat more slowly than your average tumble dryer. Some may fear the risks of clothes overheating and/or burning if left unattended for too long. While some models feature safety settings that prevent the dryer from being left on for an extended period of time, you'll need to check for this safety feature.
The downside is that heated airers can potentially cause mould and mildew issues as they increase moisture levels. This can be easily managed, though, as it just means you have to monitor how long you use them and leave damp clothing within your living environment—no different from a standard indoor clothesline.
Our top picks for heated drying racks that take pennies to run and dry clothes at a significant rate include Michelle's beloved Dry: Soon 3-Tier Heated Airer and Cover Bundle, which is currently reduced to £245 at Lakeland.
