An Akron police officer fatally shot an armed man on Thanksgiving night after responding to nearby gunfire, Ohio authorities have reported.
Two patrol officers were in a parked cruiser near East Avenue and Vernon Odom Boulevard around 11 p.m. Thursday, working on an unrelated report, when they heard gunshots, according to a news release from the Akron Police Department.
Investigating the incident, they encountered a man with a loaded firearm.
One officer discharged his weapon, striking the individual, who has yet to be identified.
Officers administered first aid until emergency medical services arrived to transport the man to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Akron Officers Placed on Leave
The officer who fired his weapon and his partner, who has been with the department for less than a year, have both been placed on paid administrative leave.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident, and the Ohio Attorney General's Office will review the results before submitting the report to a Summit County grand jury for evaluation.
Additionally, the Akron Police Department will conduct a separate internal investigation, with findings provided to the police chief and the city's independent police auditor.
