Astros Want Yankees' Rookie of the Year In Trade For All-Star: Report

The Houston Astros have been talking to multiple teams about a trade for three-time All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker. Their asking price is high, according to a new report.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported Wednesday that four teams — the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Francisco Giants — were talking to the Astros about Tucker.

According to the Post's Jon Heyman, the Astros' talks with the Yankees and Cubs have progressed to discussions around specific players they would want in return for Tucker, who averaged 30 home runs, 104 RBIs and 23 stolen bases from 2021-23.

Houston has asked the Yankees for a package involving Luis Gil, the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year, and have asked the Cubs for outfielder Seiya Suzuki and infielder Isaac Paredes, according to Heyman.

The Astros are wary of losing Tucker a year from now, when he is eligible for free agency. Astros general manager Dana Brown might be better served in the long run trading Tucker in advance to recoup some value if he does not believe he can re-sign the homegrown star.

Monday at the Winter Meetings, Brown did not answer directly whether he has received calls from other teams on Tucker but revealed that "we'll listen on anybody," as reported by The Athletic.

Gil, a 26-year-old right-hander, went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts. He also made two starts in the postseason, one against the Cleveland Guardians and another against the Los Angeles Dodgers, both Yankee wins.

The Yankees made a huge splash in free agency Tuesday, agreeing to terms on an eight-year, $218 million contract with starting pitcher Max Fried. Once that deal is official, New York will have a surplus of starting pitching. Gil, however, is probably not their preferred choice to trade from a rotation that also includes veterans Nestor Cortes, Marcus Stroman and Carlos Rodon.

Neither would Suzuki or Paredes be the Cubs' first choice to include in a deal for Tucker. Paredes, 25, slashed .234/.338/.437 with 70 home runs and 223 RBIs from 2022-24 before injuries limited him to 52 games last season. He's under team control for two more seasons — which appears to be key to the Cubs' roster plans for 2025 and beyond.

Chicago has reportedly been shopping Cody Bellinger, a talented first baseman/outfielder who is owed $27.5 million in 2025 and holds a $25 million player option for 2026.

Suzuki, 27, is owed $18 million each of the next two years and holds a full no-trade clause. He hit .283 with 21 home runs and 73 RBIs last season while stealing 16 bases and splitting time between right field and DH.
