Austin Butler and Kaia Gerber Officially Break Up After 3 Years of Dating: Here’s Why

Austin Butler and Kaia Gerber have officially broken up after three years of dating.

Multiple outlets reported the news on Tuesday, January 7. TMZ reported that they called it quits at the end of 2024, but there is “no bad blood” between them. As for why they split, apparently “the relationship just simply ran its course,” per the outlet.

Austin and Kaia first stirred up dating rumors in December 2021, after walking out of a yoga class together. Following that, they were out and about on multiple occasions, and even made their first red carpet appearance as a couple at the W Magazine’s annual Best Performances party in Los Angeles back in March 2022.

The couple made headlines after making out on the red carpet premiere of Austin’s film, Elvis.

Austin and Kaia stayed pretty private throughout their relationship (aside from a few red carpet appearances here and there), which Kaia explained during an interview with WSJ Magazine. “Honestly, I feel like so few things in my life are private, and that is one of the things that I try to keep as sacred as possible.”

During an interview with GQ in May 2022, Austin acknowledged that while he’s often photographed with his girlfriend, he attempts to ignore the internet altogether.

“I go, ‘If I don’t see the picture, then it doesn’t really exist to me’. I don’t want to be really negative, but there’s hardly any job I despise more than paparazzi’,” he said.

He also remained tight-lipped when asked to open up about his relationship, explaining. “I don’t think there’s anything I want to share about that. But thank you for providing the space.”

Prior to Kaia, Austin famously dated Vanessa Hudgens for nearly 10 years before calling it quits in 2020. In September 2022, two years after their split, the Broadway alum called her relationship with Austin “life-changing.”

“The public only sees so much,” Vanessa told Nylon at the time, referring to her romances with Austin and Zac Efron.“I’ve also been through two very long life-changing relationships, and no one really knows what happened except for me. When I write my memoir, it’ll be amazing.”

For her part, Vanessa has since moved on with husband Cole Tucker, who she married in December 2024. The two welcomed their first child together in 2024.
