Barry Keoghan might be the “cute boy with the white jacket and the thick accent” that Sabrina Carpenter sings about in her new song “Bed Chem”, but he’s also opening up about their relationship a year after they started dating.
Indeed, the Irish actor has broken his silence about their short ‘n sweet romance while chatting to documentarian Louis Theroux on his self-titled podcast.
“Are we talking about Sabrina or not?” the English filmmaker straightforwardly asked one hour into their conversation. The actor immediately let out a sigh, leading Theroux to double down and ask, “Are you in a relationship with Sabrina Carpenter?”
“Oh, I knew you’d do this,” Keoghan jokingly responded. Theroux then gently backed off and said, “We don’t have to. That’s why I asked permission first.” Despite being put on the spot, Keoghan ensured he remained in the songstress’ good graces by gushing over her in his reply.
“Listen, all I’m going to say is I’m incredibly blessed,” the Saltburn star said. “Such a strong, independent lady who’s massively talented and yeah. Pretty special,” he continued before adding, “Louis, you got me..”
The 31-year-old didn’t go into further details about their current relationship status, but the praises he sang seemed to be enough to quell the rumours that the pair had broken up earlier this year. For the unaware, Carpenter and Keoghan were reported to have called it quits in August after The Sun alleged that she had “dumped” him because his “party lifestyle was getting in the way of their relationship”.
The pair didn’t comment on the report but still shared interactions including Keoghan commenting on her Instagram posts and Carpenter shouting him out on stage while performing on tour—which seemed to dispel any belief about the claim.
Keoghan and Carpenter took their flirtation public at the 2024 Met Gala, before hard launching their relationship in the music video for her single “Please Please Please”. Speaking on working with burgeoning Hollywood heavyweight, Carpenter told Variety that Keoghan “loved” the song.
“He’s obsessed with the lyrics, and I’m so grateful for that,” she said. “I don’t want to sound biased, but I think he’s one of the best actors of this generation. So getting to see him on the screen with my song as the soundtrack made the video better and all the more special.”
Unlike Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, Keoghan has not appeared in the crowd at any of Carpenter’s recent live shows. In fact, the couple hasn’t been seen in public together since their date to London’s Chiltern Firehouse in June when she dressed like a real-life Polly Pocket doll.
Carpenter has previously admitted to wanting privacy in her life but accepts that it isn’t possible in our current climate. “‘I want to be honest—I want to just write about what’s happening in my life as a 25-year-old girl. But it comes with the territory and I just have to be like…OK!’”
