BBC Gavin and Stacey's final ever episode viewing figures after ratings war with ITV

The long-awaited Gavin and Stacey Christmas special proved to be a massive hit, captivating an impressive 12.5 million viewers and securing its place as the most-watched show on Christmas Day.

Following a five-year hiatus, fans were eager for another episode, particularly after the 2019 cliffhanger left them wondering whether Smithy (played by James Corden) had accepted Nessa's (played by Ruth Jones) proposal.

The highly anticipated conclusion drew in millions of viewers. Other popular Christmas Day shows included Wallace and Gromit and Vengeance Most Fowl, which attracted 10 million viewers, and EastEnders, which drew in 8.7 million, reports the Mirror.

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special kicked off with a shocking wedding twist, but it wasn't the union fans were expecting. Instead of Nessa and Smithy tying the knot, Smithy was preparing to marry his girlfriend Sonia, played by Laura Aikman.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, Gavin (played by Mathew Horne) intervened, stopping the ceremony at the last minute. Smithy and his friends then abandoned Sonia at the altar, allowing Smithy to chase after Nessa, who was about to board a ship.

35pm on the BBC, marking the conclusion of the story after the 2019 festive special, which ended on a cliffhanger when Vanessa ‘Nessa’ Jenkins, portrayed by Ruth, proposed to James' character Neil ‘Smithy’ Smith

The proposal didn't go smoothly, as Smithy asked Nessa to pop the question again, only to be met with a rejection. Undeterred, he expressed his feelings, saying, "It's okay. Nessa, wait! Look, I don't know what it is or why it is or when this thing that was nothing became something. And right now it's everything.

"But it did. And I know it's been messy and not perfect. But that's because we're messy and not perfect. But I love you, Nessa. I always have. I mean, not always, but most of the time. And I get it. You don't have to ask me. I'll ask you. Nessa, I love you. Will you marry me?"

The eagerly awaited wedding between the two finally aired in a charmingly intimate ceremony.

Fans flooded X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, with their reactions to the emotional episode. One happy viewer posted: "There will never be a better show than Gavin and Stacey. thanks for all the laughs and happy memories, you'll be missed!"

Another shared: "That was the most perfect way to end Gavin + Stacey. Tonight I've laughed. I've cried. And everything in between. Ruth Jones, Nessa, and James Corden, Smithy, claimed on premiere night that the series is about love's emotional spectrum - tonight proved it."
