The 60-year-old newsreader left viewers worried while hosting the BBC's News at Six on Monday night (January 6). Many had noticed his left eye appeared to be drooping throughout the programme and took to social media with their worries for the presenter.
One asked: "@BBCNews is Clive Myrie ok? His left eye is droopy??" and a second said: "Is Clive Myrie OK? His eye's drooping". Another commented: "Something wrong with Clive Myrie’s left eye @BBCNews?", and a third wondered: "What’s wrong with Clive Myrie’s eye tonight?".
However, Clive himself has now reassured viewers that he is okay, explaining he was simply suffering from a non-serious eye infection. In his humorous tone, the broadcaster revealed he'd wanted to wear an eye patch but was denied by his bosses as he looked like a pirate.
He wrote on X: "Happy N.Year everyone and thank you all for your concern over my left eye. It’s nothing serious, just an infection.
'I did think about wearing an eye patch, but the boss said no! A bit like Long John Silver. He wasn’t having any of it! Cheers."
Clive has been regular on BBC News bulletins for over a decade, having joined the channel in 2009. Since 2021, he's also been the host Mastermind and Celebrity Mastermind.
The presenter recently made headlines when it emerged he hadn't declared all his earnings from corporate gigs over the last year. Clive, who reportedly earns over £300k a year for presenting on BBC News, apologised and said he wouldn't be taking part in any more paid external events for the forseeable.
He wrote: "An apology – I've had several administrative issues, and I didn't fill out the correct paperwork for some of my external public events, so they haven't been published until now."
"I've told the BBC I won't be doing any more paid outside gigs for a good while, except for a few I'd already agreed to, to make sure this doesn't happen again."
A BBC spokesperson had said: "We have spoken to Clive to remind him of his responsibilities with regards to the external events register, and he has apologised for these errors."
