The Chicago White Sox are set to take another step back in order to set their franchise up for future success. Rumors are swirling that the White Sox could trade both their ace Garrett Crochet and their star outfielder Luis Robert Jr.
The Athletic's Jim Bowden reported that all indications point to Crochet being traded this offseason. Bowden listed the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers as potential fits, but the Philadelphia Phillies could be the ideal spot for the southpaw starter.
Here's what a deal could look like to send Crochet to Philadelphia:
- Philadelphia receives: LHP Garrett Crochet
- Chicago receives: SS Starlyn Caba, RHP Mick Abel, OF Griffin Burkholder
Chicago seems to be more interested in the younger prospects, so the pair of Starlyn Caba (18 years old, No. 81 overall prospect on MLB Pipeline) and Griffin Burkholder (19 years old, No. 8 Phillies prospect) would bode well in this deal. Mick Abel isn't young, but he's a former top-100 talent who still holds a lot of potential despite struggling tremendously last year. If he has a change of scenery, he could blossom into the pitcher that he was supposed to be.
For the Phillies, this trade would give them the fifth starter that they needed last year over Taijuan Walker. As for the prospects they're losing in the deal, yes, it would hurt their system, but not as bad as you think.
Caba is talented and incredibly young, but Philadelphia has top prospect Aidan Miller at shortstop. He appears to be the shortstop of the future. Not to mention, Devin Saltiban and Bryan Rincon are top shortstop talents in their system.
Burkholder would be tough to part with after selecting him in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft, but Philadelphia has two outfielders, including 2024's first-round pick, ranked above him in MLB Pipeline's rankings.
