Blockbuster Red Sox Trade Pitch Brings Boston Ideal Blake Snell Backup Plan

The Boston Red Sox were heavily involved in the free agency negotiations with San Francisco Giants ace Blake Snell. Unfortunately for Boston, Snell agreed to a deal with the powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers.

This leaves Boston looking for a Snell replacement who can come in and fill the role as the team's ace.

Mark Powell of FanSided has proposed a trade that would bring the Red Sox the ideal Snell replacement: Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet.

Here's the full deal proposed by Powell to send Crochet to Boston:

  • Boston Red Sox receive: LHP Garrett Crochet
  • Chicago White Sox receive: OF, Wilyer Abreu, OF Braden Montgomery (No. 5 prospect), OF Jhostynxon Garcia (No. 12 prospect), LHP Connelly Early (No. 24 prospect)

"Red Sox fans will punt me into the sun for suggesting such a trade package, but please keep in mind this is a break-in-case-of-emergency deal," Powell wrote. "Boston would prefer to land Crochet without dealing any of their top-100 prospects, which is just unrealistic. Montgomery is ranked No. 54 in MLB Pipeline, but he's also behind both Roman Anthony and potentially Kristian Campbell at his position."

Obviously, the Red Sox don't want to part ways with this kind of package. Montgomery was the Red Sox's first-round draft pick in 2024. He comes with a lot of potential and was almost universally seen as one of the top-position players in the class.

Garcia and Early are no slouches themselves either. Early has a 4.00 ERA in 24 career professional minor league starts while Garcia posted an OPS near .900 last season in the minor leagues.

Abreu is still a very valuable piece for Boston as well, though the Red Sox are looking to upgrade from the young outfielder.

If Boston runs out of options, this deal could make some sense, but I'd expect the Red Sox to pursue the free agent pitchers before sending Montgomery for Crochet.
