The Seattle Mariners are reportedly listening to offers for their starting pitcher Luis Castillo if the deal will improve their big league roster for a 2025 World Series push.
While there are plenty of suitors that could use Castillo's talent, Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer favors the Chicago Cubs to land the $108 million pitcher. Rymer recently put together quite an intriguing hypothetical trade package that would send Castillo to the Windy City.
Here's the deal pitched by Rymer which would send Castillo to the Cubs:
- Chicago Cubs receive: RHP Luis Castillo, Cash
- Seattle Mariners receive: OF Owen Caissie (No. 2 prospect)
"The North Siders' rotation is arguably good enough as is, but one thing it lacked this year was swing-and-miss," Rymer wrote. "Only two starting staffs allowed a higher contact rate, whereas even this lesser version of Castillo was in the 53rd percentile for whiff rate. It's in the Mariners' interest that the Cubs' farm system is loaded. So much so, in fact, that it would be worth paying down some of Castillo's remaining money to get at one of the better players within said system."
Caissie, 22, is an MLB-ready outfielder who would come to Seattle to make a difference right now and for years to come. The young prospect has a minor league career OPS north of .850 as he's clearly outgrown this level of baseball.
Castillo would join a Cubs team that has a real chance to win the National League Central in 2025. Chicago appears to be all-in for the 2025 season and a trade for Castillo would help in that pursuit of success.
