Blue Jays Targeting Two More Hitters After Signing Anthony Santander: Report

3 hours ago 3

The Toronto Blue Jays broke their free agent drought by signing Anthony Santander, but according to a new report they aren't done trying to add to their lineup.

Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital, who reported earlier in January that the Blue Jays were frontrunners to sign Santander, now reports that Toronto is targeting two more hitters to add to their lineup: either Pete Alonso or Jurickson Profar.

Santander, a switch-hitting outfielder, hit 44 home runs last season. He has 155 home runs and 435 RBIs over the last eight seasons, all with Baltimore.

The Venezuelan native will add depth to a Toronto lineup that struggled to hit for power in 2024.

Alonso, who hit 53 home runs as a rookie for the New York Mets, seems destined to sign elsewhere after reportedly rejecting New York's offer of a three-year contract in the $68-70 million range.

A right-handed hitting first baseman, Alonso hit 34 home runs last season and has hit 226 homers since his 2019 Rookie of the Year campaign with the Mets.

Alonso has played first base since his major league debut, and likely would trade off between first base and designated hitter if he signs with Toronto. Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., meanwhile, could trade off between third base, first base and DH.

Andy Martino of SNY recently reported that the Mets "have spoken with the Toronto Blue Jays this winter" about a possible trade involving Guerrero, but that would be a longshot at best.

Profar, 31, is coming off a breakout season with the San Diego Padres that saw him set career-highs in home runs (24), RBIs (85), batting aveage (.280) and OPS (.839).

Primarily a left fielder for the Padres in 2024, Profar has experience at seven different positions in a career that began in 2012 with the Texas Rangers. Profar was All-Star for the first time last July and is likely seeking a multi-year contract after playing for four teams over the last 11 seasons.

The Jays came up short in their pursuits of free agents Shohei Ohtani, Roki Sasaki, Corbin Burnes, Teoscar Hernández and Juan Soto over the last 14 months. After signing Santander, it's clear the Jays' front office is not content to call it a day.

Toronto finished 74-88, fifth place in the American League East, in 2024.
