Breaking Amish alum Mama Mary Schmucker is in hospice care after her two-year battle with colon cancer. Daughter-in-law Rebecca Schmucker broke the news to fans with an emotional plea.
“I’m making a prayer request for mom. She’s not feeling good the last few weeks and can’t keep anything down and she’s having trouble eating. She is on hospice now,” Rebecca, 33, wrote in a Wednesday, November 13, Instagram post next to a photo of the family matriarch, 65.
“Her pain has been so bad and they are helping with that. If you could, flood her with positive messages and pray for her to be comfortable and pain free. Thank you!” she added.
Mary appeared on TLC’s Breaking Amish and Return to Amish, along with her son, Abe, and his wife, Rebecca. Even after the couple left the spinoff, Mary continued to be featured until she announced during an Instagram Live on March 10, 2022, that she would be departing the show.
“I am not coming back on TV, but a lot of the others went back. I would love to come back on TV, but there’s too many issues that won’t work for me,” the Pennsylvania native said at the time. “I would like to come back, but come back as we are doing now. I feel we should do a story like what happened after the show, where we are now and what happened to us, so people know, but they don’t want to do that.”
Sadly, one month later Mary’s cancer diagnosis was revealed.
“I just want to give a little update,” Mary wrote via her private Tupperware sales Facebook group in April 2022. “As you know I have colon cancer, and I am scheduled for surgery this month.”
She underwent a procedure on April 22, 2022, and a friend of Mary’s told pals two days later, “I talked to Mary this morning. She says the doctor feels he was able to get all the cancer!! And she’s coming home today!!”
Mary gave friends a sad update in June 2022, via her private Facebook group. “When I did my surgery, they said they got all of the cancer. Two weeks later they called me and said, ‘You have to come in right away.’ Now they tell me, I have stage three cancer, almost stage four. Chemo will not help on stage four. So, why should I even do chemo? But I’m not taking their word for it; I’m going for a second opinion.”
The former reality star hadn’t shared an Instagram post since a Live session she did in September 2023, where she discussed her cookbook. Mary returned to Facebook briefly in August to reshare a post about how schools should teach children how to write in cursive. She also reposted a TikTok video by Rebecca helping raise funds for relatives who lost their 1-year-old son after a battle with heart issues.
Fans took Rebecca’s plea to heart, flooding her Instagram post with positive messages for Mary.
“We love you please fight,” one person wrote along with a red heart emoji. “I pray you feel better Mary! I loved watching you on the show and seeing you be the rock for everyone. We love you! Get well soon,” another commented, while a fan told Mary, “Praying you feel better. You’ve been such an anchor to your family and an example of unconditional love and support.”
