Sunset Blvd brought in $1.2 million last week, despite having five performances that included many comped tickets for press leading up to opening night on Oct. 20, as well as an entirely comped opening night.

The revival, which received raves for Nicole Scherzinger’s performance but varying reviews for its take on the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, played to close to 100 percent capacity at the St. James Theatre.

Romeo + Juliet also welcomed press last week, and still brought in a strong $1.06 million for its first full week of eight performances and played to more than 100 percent capacity at the Circle in the Square Theatre. The play, starring Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, opens Oct. 24.

After the highs of last week, around the holiday weekend, several shows fell back to more standard grosses. Making up the top three in the industry, Wicked grossed $2.2 million, about $250,000 less than last week, The Lion King made $2 million, about $200,000 less, and Hamilton brought in $1.9 million, about $100,000 less.

Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen added to its coffers, bringing in $1.55 million or close to $130,000 more than the prior week. Cabaret, starring Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho, saw its grosses increase by $69,000 to $1,123,538, while playing to 93 percent capacity. That’s the second week of increasing grosses for Cabaret, though the totals are still below what the show brought in with Eddie Redmayne starring in the show.

Overall, the industry saw its grosses ticket up about 1 percent from last week and attendance increase about 5 percent as several new shows began previews, including Maybe Happy Ending, starring Darren Criss and Helen J Shen, which brought in $241,825 for five previews at the Belasco Theatre and played to 81 percent of capacity. Its opening is November 12.

Tammy Faye, with music by Elton John, played one preview at the Palace Theater, filling 90 percent of seats and grossing $167,504. Opening night is set for November 14. A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical, played its first seven performances at Studio 54 and filed 84 percent of seats. Opening night is November 11.
