BSNL has claimed the title of being the first telecom operator to launch a satellite-to-device service in India. For the same, BSNL is making an alliance with US-based satellite communications firm Viasat to offer the same in India. The Government-owned telecom operator showcased the satellite-powered two-way messaging services to all the attendants at the Indian Mobile Congress.
In an official post on X, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) says, ‘BSNL launches India’s 1st Satellite-to-Device service! Seamless connectivity now reaches India’s remotest corners.’
BSNL satellite-to-device service details
Viasat gave a proper demonstration of two-way messaging and emergency SOS messaging with a commercial Android device allowed to host non-terrestrial network connectivity. Messages were sent to one of ViaSat’s geostationary L-band satellites located 36,000 km away. The latest tech works on global mobile 3GPP release 17 standards. The same standards are being adopted by satellite operators, chipset manufacturers, and telecom firms on a global level.

In Addition, Viasat also explained the direct-to-device connectivity that lets everyday devices like cars, smartwatches, and mobile phones, connect seamlessly to terrestrial and satellite networks. Furthermore, the tech will also work on industrial machinery and transportation machinery as well.
The exact details of how the service will work are yet to be announced including the regions where it will be available, service usage fees, applicable regions, and more.
With all these things in action, we can say that BSNL is trying its best to survive in the highly competitive Indian telecom operator market. Pretty recently, the company also went through a little rebranding and it is focusing on other services like spam free network and more.
