‘Cake Daddy’ Mikey Day’s best Is it Cake moments

Is It Cake? enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting the Thanksgiving premiere of Is It Cake? Holiday on Netflix.

For me, the true star of Is It Cake? isn’t the contestants and cake, it’s host Mikey Day, aka Cake Daddy.

I’ve compiled a list of his best moments, from season one to season three, showcasing the genius behind his “Cake Daddy” persona. Get ready to laugh, cringe, and fall in love with Mikey’s chaotic humor all over again.

Mikey being insecure about his legs

It’s become a running joke that anytime Mikey’s legs are bare, he can’t help but point them out and crack jokes about how small they are. Poor Mikey—those leg insecurities hit hard. Don’t worry, Mikey, we all dread leg day at the gym too!

  • “Home to alarming creatures like poisonous snakes, ferocious cats, and once again my weird bare legs. Why are they the width of a child’s but covered in hair?”
  • “I have Gollum’s legs.”
  • “The smell of pine, the sound of wildfire, and of course me in Boy Scout shorts.”
  • While jumping on a baby trampoline, Mikey did a time call: “Two hours, bakers! My calves already hurt.”
  • “And back by no demand: me in shorts.”

Mikey Day? More like Michael Myers

A person holding a red axe near their face and subtitles saying "You should be scared!"

Mikey always concerns me with the sharp objects that he introduces to the show but glad he’s caught on to his nickname: “Daddy got his knife back.”

I’m sure everyone is aware that Mikey loves playing “Cake or Cash” to see contestants win more money, but when they don’t win—like Elizabeth, for example—he starts beating the cake cash with an axe saying, “I don’t like you.” Major serial killer vibes, Mikey!

Other examples:

  • “They gave me a sword to do this; zero safety training with it. “
  • “When it is not cake, it dies.”
  • “Are you scared, you should be scared—muahahaha!”
  • “They’re running. They’re freaking out. I love it”
  • “Everyone sleeps with a massive knife under their pillow, right?”

Mike’s WTF lines

Possible brainrot moments:

  • Mikey was rolling backwards in a swivel chair in season two and ended up flying off the chair. After he recovered, he said, “Twitter’s already reacting: My favorite part of the show is when he fell.”
  • “Fingers crossed. I’m also crossing my toes for you, and I don’t do that for just anyone.”
  • “I’ve fallen into the gears again and I am very badly burned.”
  • He was using a thigh master during the gym episode: “It burns but it’s worth it”
  • “What, you’ve never seen a grown man stroke a vampire’s face?”
  • I love the moment when Mikey pretended to take a nap in the middle of the cake battle, only to start ‘dreaming’ aloud about every baker’s worst nightmare: “Uh, the Somerset. The chocolate’s not sheeted. I’m sorry I had a nightmare”

Mikey Day mocking contestants

  • Mikey sometimes asks bakers why they identified an object as cake. When Sam responded, “I feel like I just keep picking one, without really thinking about it,” Mikey replied, “You guys are the top in your field and the reasoning I got is I just picked one?!”
  • As Steve, a contestant on season 1, was picking out decoys, Mikey was mocking him: “I’ll take this, I’ll need some of this—hmm, maybe some of this, too.”
  • “Johnny also thinks it’s cake, but he picked the shoe. Now that’s an interesting strategy. We’ll see if it pays off.”
  • In season three, the D’Amelio family judged a group that included Pete, who has two 13-year-old daughters who are big D’Amelio sisters fans. Mikey mocked Pete for what he was probably thinking: “Are we gonna get a chance to get selfies?” Then he corrected himself: “I’m sorry; that was inappropriate.”
  • During season 1, Andrew, a contestant, was walking across the set when Mikey was entering to deliver a decoy. Mikey, being the diva he is, said, “Did you just cross during my big entrance? How dare you!”
  • During the show Mikey is always being loud, obnoxious, and distracting—and loves knowing that he is the problem: “Guess who has a microphone? Uh oh!”
  • Kristen, a contestant from season 3 who is originally from Canada, was panicking about her cake and Mikey asked if she was okay. She apprehensively said yes but her body language did not reflect that but, Mikey caught on and made a joke asking: “Was that Canadian Panic?”

Doses of millennial pop culture

Mikey’s comments often revolve around millennial pop culture. How do I know this as a Gen Z kid? I have my millennial sister to thank for keeping me well-cultured!

  • “I know you thought it was Britney Spears. Oh baby, baby!”
  • During the ’90s theme episode, after we saw an image of Mikey with the Rachel haircut from Friends doing duck face, he did this time call: “Two hours bakers. That’s enough time to get the Rachel haircut. Did anyone get the Rachel haircut? I did. It was weiiirdddd.”
  • That same episode, he also stared deeply into the camera and said, “I remember going to the video store before Netflix”.
  • “The ’90s: Dawson Creek was in love with Katie Holmes”
  • “Once that Iceberg hits…” ship horn blares “…I always win, Jack. One way or another”

Context doesn’t make it better

A person wearing a robe with the subtitle "Dare me to?"
  • “That’s a beautiful log, Timmy. That sounded odd.”
  • “I brought some toys, which is weird to say to a group of adults.”
  • Mikey was finally playing Cake or Cash with someone other than Andrew, who had been dominating the challenges nonstop. Turning to the day’s winning baker, April, he joked, “Normally, I come here with Andrew. It feels so weird to be here with someone else. I’m sorry.”
  • During the room service-themed challenge, Mikey kicked off the episode in a staged hotel room, lounging in a robe. With a playful, seductive stare at the contestants and his hands ready to untie the robe he teasingly asked, “Dare me to?”

Cake 15 News

My favorite part of seasons 2 and 3 was Cake 15 News. Mikey pretended to be a news anchor, complete with a British or Australian accent, saying things like:

  • “Reporting live from the finale for Cake 15 News. Cake 15 News: We are news, we are cake”—Mikey bites into the microphone—“Good god that’s a tasty microphone.”

Mikey is always doing something to entertain the bakers, and in one instance, started to chase Peter as if he was paparazzi:

Mikey: “Peter! Cake 15 News. Putting final touches on how do you feel?”
Peter: “Excellent.”
Mikey: “Of course you doooo, that’s the Pete I know that’s the Pete I know”

Cake Daddy’s most-relatable sayings

A person in a suit sitting up from a pillow on the floor

I felt such a strong connection to Mikey during the gym-themed challenge: “I did not know there would be running.” Honestly, same energy.

Mikey is my spirit animal: “My personal favorite, the late night snack”

Anytime something major occurs in my life: “I have to call my mom.”

When Mikey staged a mockup version of a high school graduation ceremony for Justin, he highlighted a universal experience: “Now to make it even more authentically high school, I will mispronounce your last name.”

After the ceremony, he commented, “Isn’t that how you always picture your high school graduation? Being handed your diploma by one of the white guys on SNL?”

Watching Mikey is like witnessing my last two brain cells battling it out for my attention: “Where’s my camera? Which camera will I look at? This one or this one? It’s a fight for my focus.”

This is what I will be doing when I get a corporate job (Shhh! Don’t tell my future boss!): “Taking a nap in a full suit.”

While he may joke around, Mikey can also be very inspirational, once saying, “You define you.”

Mikey sometimes is too real with his commentary: “Keep doing what you do best: ignore me. I’d ignore me as well.”
