Jessica Raine, star of Call the Midwife, has given fans a sneak peek into the second series of her 'spine-chilling' TV show The Devil's Hour.

The 42-year-old actress, famed for her role as Jenny Lee in Call the Midwife, portrays the lead character Lucy Chambers in Amazon Prime Video's The Devil's Hour, which also features Peter Capaldi as Gideon Shepherd.

The debut season of the time-hopping psychological thriller, crafted by Tom Moran, traced the historical events linking serial killer Gideon and mother Lucy.

In the second series, the new five episodes serve as both a sequel and a prequel, unveiling Gideon's genuine motives as he forms a shaky alliance with Lucy to track down and eliminate an elusive evil force.

However, Lucy's past-life spouse DI Ravi Dhillon (Nikesh Patel), whom she guided in another timeline, is collaborating with DS Sam Boyd (Saffron Hocking) to apprehend Gideon.

Simultaneously, Lucy's son Isaac (Benjamin Chivers) battles to exist in a reality that denies his presence, succumbing to potent new feelings that will alter the destiny of all characters and their recurring lives, reports the Mirror.

During Wednesday's episode of Lorraine, guest presenter Christine Lampard said of the series: "It's been dubbed TV's most chilling show!" while questioning Jessica about her experience playing the "complex" character of Lucy.

Jessica described her character's unsettling life in the show: "So in series one, we meet Lucy, she's very frazzled. She is the mother of an eight-year-old boy who is an emotionless blank so that is sort of disturbing in itself. She wakes up at 3:33am every morning from a horrible nightmare, she keeps getting flashes of deja vu and memories."

Reflecting on the first series, Jessica recounted that it was "ghostly", "unnerving" and a "slow drip of terror". She confessed: "Lots of my friends actually were like: 'I'm not sure I can go on with this,' they were really scared and lots of people did start waking up at 3:33am!" Christine then commented: "Oh dear!"

Commenting on the excellence of the series, the presenter added: "Well, The Devil's Hour, it's so brilliant. Like you say, I agree with your husband and your friends, there's moments where I'm like: 'Oh I'm not sure I can do this!' but you can't help yourself."

Regarding her experience working on the show, Jessica shared: "Honestly, it's probably one of my favourite roles I've ever played. She's [her character Lucy] is amazing and the show is incredible!"

Lorraine continues on weekdays at 9am on both ITV and ITV X.
