Cameron Diaz hits red carpet for first time in 5 years with perfect anti-Hollywood look

Cameron Diaz took to the red carpet for the first time in five years last night after retiring from the industry a decade ago.

The Holiday star, 52, last starred in 2014’s Annie, and later announced her retirement to ‘put motherhood first’.

While she’s been out of the business for a decade, the mother-of-two made a red carpet appearance in 2019 alongside Drew Barrymore and Demi Moore to celebrate Lucy Liu’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Now, she’s back on the red carpet after coming out of retirement for a one off role in the action comedy film Back in Action alongside Jamie Foxx.

Appearing dressed head-to-toe in black, the actress went for a very understated look for the outing wearing jeans, a sheer top, and an over-sized jacket for the moment, also sporting some shiny black shoes.

She posed alongside Jamie, 57 – who has just returned to work after suffering a stroke in 2023 – who wore a stripe-lined black jacket and smart trousers.

Cameron previously told Empire she was tempted out of retirement for this film purely to work with Jamie again following their collaboration on Any Given Sunday and Annie.

She said: ‘I thought that if I was going to come back and do a movie, the only person I’d come back and do it with would be this guy (Foxx).’

‘Seriously. I had other opportunities along the way and I was always saying “No. I’m not doing it, I’ve told you… What? Jamie asked? Jamie? Oh, I can do a movie with Jamie!”‘

During Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit last year, Cameron shared that her decision to stop acting was something she ‘had to do’.

‘It felt like the right thing for me to reclaim my own life. And I just really didn’t care about anything else.

‘Nobody’s opinion, nobody’s success, no one’s offer, no one’s anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and building the life that I really wanted to have,’ she continued.

‘It really comes to: What are you passionate about? For me, it was to build my family.’

Written and directed by Seth Gordon, Netflix film Back in Action premieres on January 17, and follows Jamie and Cameron’s characters – former CIA spies, Matt and Emily – as they get roped back into the job after their secret identities are exposed.

Cameron married US musician Benji Madden in 2015, officially meeting in 2014 at an event, having socialised in very similar circles for years. His brother is Joel Madden, the husband of her close friend Nicole Richie.

‘Joel said, “Hey, can my brother come over?”’ Cameron later recalled of their official meet. ‘And I said, “Of course, it’s family, we’re having a barbecue,” and then [Benji] walked in the door and I was like—you! You!’

They have since had two children together – Raddix Madden, 5, and baby Cardinal Madden, who they welcomed last year.
