The vibes at Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign are surely turning somber as two key battleground states move further out of her reach.
Shortly before 11:30 p.m. ET, the Associated Press projected North Carolina would go to former President Donald Trump, delivering a major victory to the Republican presidential nominee. CNN, NBC News and Fox News also called the race.
Without the Tar Heel State, Trump would have had to carry Pennsylvania to win the White House.
The news also comes as Trump leads Harris in Georgia with about 136,000 votes. An estimated 91 percent of the state's votes have been counted. Brad Raffensperger, the state's Republican secretary of state who famously denied Trump the 11,700 votes he needed to overturn the 2020 election in the Peach State, said just before 11 p.m. ET that he predicts Georgia will go for the former president.
"If you look at who's leading the race right now, Donald J. Trump has an insurmountable lead, with the number of votes outstanding," Raffensperger told reporters. "It looks like this is done."
North Carolina and Georgia each have 16 electoral votes up for grabs.
Does Harris Have a Chance to Win?
Harris' chances of taking the White House are bleaker without these two states.
Yet there is still a chance that she could win the election. It would, however, take major strength in four of the seven battleground states.
Trump is already expected to win Arizona and its 11 electoral votes. If he does, Harris cannot become president without winning Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
As of 11:35 p.m. ET, Trump has the lead over Harris in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
Trump is up by 82,000 votes in Michigan, with an estimated 37 percent of the vote reported, up by 62,000 votes in Wisconsin, with an estimated 69 percent of the vote reported, and up by 193,000 votes in Pennsylvania, with an estimated 80 percent of the vote. There is still time for Harris to catch up, but she would have to make significant improvements in order to do so.
Nevada, where polls did not close until 11 p.m. ET, has not begun tabulating ballots.
Can Harris Win Without Pennsylvania?
No.
Even if Harris can secure Arizona and the remaining three swing states—Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada—she would need Pennsylvania to win the 270 electoral votes to clinch the presidency.
With 19 electoral votes, the most of the seven battleground states, the Keystone State is the crown jewel in the 2024 election.
