On the first episode of Phone Truths, Carl reunites with former 2FM Breakfast co-host Doireann Garrihy as the pair catch up over how their respective careers started off by making content on their phones.
Doireann used Snapchat as a launchpad to the success she has today as a prolific podcaster and presenter of Dancing With The Stars, something she says she is "massively" grateful for.
"I was doing the entertainment news on Spin and I really wanted to be on-air fulltime and I was like, ‘How can I get them to notice me?’ because I kind of realised if you have another string to your bow you can bring on air or show you want it really badly, and do something about that, it’s going to help you," she told Carl.
"I knew I was good at impressions and at the time Snapchat was so big, and the Pippa O’Connors, the Roz Purcells and SoSueMes were so big, and I did the impressions of them – and from there it took off. Things have been so consistently busy in the best possible way. Without my phone or social media that definitely wouldn’t have happened."
Doireann added that her phone has taught her a lot about herself, particularly in the age of social media.
She said: "I am a lot stronger as a result of what I do with my phone, in terms of social media and what I put out there. I think I have learned patience and the building a thick skin is a massive one. I think it’s taken a long time to actually truly feel like I have a thicker skin because of what I do online and I am grateful for that.
"It is really hard, but much like anything you learn in life usually you have to have gone through something hard in order to learn it. There’s been times I have wanted to throw the phone out the window and never go on it again because people can be cruel, but it really is a reflection of them rather than you."
