Fans of Carrie Underwood have criticised her decision to perform at Donald Trump's inauguration.
The country music icon is set to perform 'America the Beautiful' at President-elect Trump's inauguration next week, sharing the stage with Village People at two events.
Carrie, who shot to fame on American Idol, will perform just before the controversy-ridden President takes the oath at the Capitol on January 20. However, the 41-year-old singer-songwriter has previously made light of Trump, most notably at the 2017 Country Music Awards.
During the show, she and Brad Paisley poked fun at the former Apprentice star. They performed a revised version of her song 'Before He Cheats', changing the lyrics to ridicule Trump's peculiar Twitter outbursts.
"It's fun to watch, yeah, that's for sure, 'til little Rocket Man starts a nuclear war," one lyric said. But it seems she has now reversed her previous stance.
Speaking about performing before Trump resumes his role in the Oval Office, she told Associated Press: "I love our country and am honoured to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future", reports the Mirror.
Despite Carrie Underwood's apparent enthusiasm, her career move has not been warmly received on X, formerly known as Twitter, where users have shared their opinions. One user commented: "Carrie Underwood's career dropping to the lowest it's ever been and she hasn't had a hit song in over 10 years."
A second expressed: "Say bye-bye to your career! ! ! " while another added: "Carrie Underwood will perform at Donald Trump's inauguration: 'We must all come together in the spirit of unity' Her career is over."
Someone else announced their intention to block her on all apps and boycott her music saying, "Carrie Underwood is preforming at Trump's inauguration so I'm blocking her on all apps and boycotting all her music."
Meanwhile, Underwood's UK fanpage indicated a distancing from the artist with the tweet: "While I will always love and support @carrieunderwood, this account will not be covering her upcoming appearance at Donald Trump's inauguration nor any other comments/appearances she makes in support of this convicted felon."
Other performers slated for the inauguration include two of Trump's favourites, country singer Lee Greenwood and opera vocalist Christopher Macchio.
Village People also addressed their own participation with a statement on Facebook: "We know this won't make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics."
"Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost. Therefore, we believe it's now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump."
The inaugural festivities for Donald Trump's anticipated second term are set to begin this weekend in Washington, starting with a firework display at his Sterling, Virginia golf club, followed by a campaign-like rally in D.C, an appearance at Arlington National Cemetery, and high-profile dinners leading up to the oath-taking ceremony.
After not attending President Joe Biden's inauguration following the contentious 2020 election results, Trump's re-inauguration is shaping up to be quite different.

Visible scars from the January 6 attack still remained during Biden's swearing-in, but this time, the former president will be sworn in anew amidst a four-day extravaganza of celebrations, with the incumbent Biden expected to be present.
