Carrots, Vegetable Mix Recalled as Health Risk Warning Issued

Several carrot products and vegetable mixes have been recalled due to E-coli concerns.

In an announcement posted on Friday on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, the agency said 4Earth Farms of Commerce, California, was recalling multiple brands of Organic Vegetable Medley, Conventional Vegetable Medley, and Organic Whole Carrots in New Hampshire, Florida, California, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Illinois, and Colorado over concerns they may be contaminated with Escherichia coli (E. coli).

E. coli is a bacterium that "can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system," says the press release shared by the FDA.

Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. However, no illnesses have been reported to 4Earth Farms to date.

According to the FDA, some of the recalled products were sold at Walmart.

All recalled products can be identified with "Best by" dates of September 7, 2024, through November 2, 2024.

The recall was initiated after 4EarthFarms was notified by Grimmway Farms, Inc. that carrots used in the Vegetable Medleys and Whole Organic Carrots may be contaminated with the bacteria.

"4Earth Farms is voluntarily issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution and based on information received from Grimmway Farms Inc., regarding the possible contamination of its product. All 4Earth Farms items impacted by this announcement have been expired for more than 3 weeks," the announcement said.

The FDA said the items will no longer be available in stores, but if consumers still have the recalled products in their home, they should throw them away and clean and sanitize surfaces they touched.

It comes after Grimmway Farms recalled some of its organic whole and baby carrots earlier this month amid an E. coli outbreak, affecting 19 brands across the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada, including Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Wegmans.

At the time, Grimmway Farms said: "Consumers who purchased carrots in the table below and still have them in their refrigerator or freezer should not consume them; they should be destroyed or discarded so they cannot be consumed.

"If you have these products in your home, do not eat or use them, throw them away, and clean and sanitize surfaces they touched. Consumers concerned about an illness should contact a medical professional."

Grimmway Farms President and CEO Jeff Huckaby added: "We take our role in ensuring the safety and quality of our products seriously. The health of our customers and the integrity of our products are our highest priorities, and we are conducting a thorough review of our growing, harvest, and processing practices. Our food safety team is working with our suppliers and health authorities."
