CBS’ ‘Late Show’ Lands Post-AFC Championship Game Spot

CBS will continue its tradition of giving The Late Show With Stephen Colbert a late-night spot after its biggest NFL broadcast — although that won’t be the Super Bowl this year.

With the NFL’s title game set to air on Fox in February, CBS will instead give The Late Show a showcase following the AFC Championship on Jan. 26. Outside of the Super Bowl, the two conference championships on CBS and Fox typically draw the largest audiences for the NFL (or any other network programming) in a given season.

CBS will also debut its new medical drama Watson, starring Morris Chestnut, after the AFC title game.

Colbert has hosted a Late Show episode on Super Bowl Sunday each of the past four times CBS has aired the game, including last year. Some of those shows have aired live, though the Jan. 26 edition will be taped in advance. A guest lineup for the show will be announced closer to the airdate.

The Late Show will follow Watson and local newscasts in all time zones, airing at 11:35 p.m. ET/8:35 p.m. PT, and 10:35 p.m. in both the Central and Mountain time zones (the start time is approximate, depending on how long the NFL telecast goes). CBS will also use the AFC Championship to promote its midseason premieres and returns, most of which are set for the week of Jan. 27.
