Colin Firth is a man on a mission in the trailer for Peacock (it will be on Peacock in the U.S., anyway) limited drama series “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth.” The man is Dr. Jim Swire; the mission is the truth.
Swire is the father of one of the victims of the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 explosion. Swire is a real person, and the tragedy over Lockerbie, Scotland is an all-too-real event.
On December 21, 1988, 259 passengers and crew (190 were Americans, 43 were citizens of the UK) were killed when Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie 38 minutes after take-off. Eleven residents on the ground died as the plane crashed down. Dr. Swire became the nominated spokesperson for the UK victims’ families — he also became obsessed with the hunt for the truth, in only the way a grieving parent could.
The “Lockerbie” trailer was released on Thursday and can be viewed at the end of this story.
“Traveling across continents and political divides, Jim embarks on a relentless journey that not only jeopardizes his stability, family and life, but completely overturns his trust in the justice system,” the limited series’ synopsis reads. “As the truth shifts under Jim’s feet, his view of the world is left forever changed.”
It continues, “Exploring events from the disaster and its aftermath, ‘Lockerbie: A Search for Truth‘ provides an intimate account of a man, a husband, and a father who risks everything in memory of his daughter and the unflinching pursuit of truth and justice.”
Just in 2022, Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi (Mas’ud), then 71, of Tunisia and Libya, was taken into U.S. custody. He is suspected of making the bomb that caused the explosion. Mas’ud pleaded not guilty; a 2025 trial awaits.
