Coronation Street could be about to axe several characters in a shake-up to the cobbles.

The ITV soap is going into 2025 without one of its staple characters, after Gail Platt finally said goodbye to Weatherfield after fifty years on the street. It comes as a new dark storyline is going to affect all the residents of the street, with some new "neighbours from hell".

But in order to make space for the new arrivals, that will come into the soap next year, ITV has said that it will be reviewing their star's contracts. As a result, several beloved characters could be able to have shock exits from the show, as a new boss steps in.

Kate Brooks, who has previously directed Emmerdale, will be taking on the reins of Britain's longest-running soap, has opened up on some of her plans for the programme - and no one is safe. In an interview with The Sun, she confirmed that some Coronation Street fan favourites will be given the chop next year, but who and when they will be leaving will remain a mystery.

"There are a few exits this year, and some unexpected ones that will send shockwaves," Kate said. "People might not expect the exits, but there are a few."

But Kate confirmed that a number of previous characters will make a return for other storylines - including baddie Rob Donovan, who is set to cause havoc for his child Bobby and sister Carla, who has recently fallen for policewoman Lisa Swain.

Speaking about his return, Kate explained that despite having "made mistakes", Rob wants to make amends. "He comes back to the show and we think he might be a reformed character who has seen the error of his ways, but whether that’s the case or not, I don’t know!" she joked.

As well as this, Kate has confirmed that a much-loved character - who was first mentioned on the show almost forty years ago - will be making an appearance. Kevin and Debbie Webster's brother Carl will make his debut on the cobbles, after having never been seen on-screen.

"We’ve got Carl Webster coming into the show, who is Debbie and Kevin’s brother, to build up that Webster clan," Kate revealed. "We’ve got big stories coming up for Debbie and Kevin. It’s about building that clan up."

Carl's arrival will come at the perfect time for the family, as Kevin will undertake a really heavy storyline when it is discovered that he has testicular cancer. Together with Debbie and Carl, Kevin will have to brace through the treatment as he takes on a huge battle that could ultimately cost him his life.

On top of these new storylines, a new family entirely will move into Weatherfield, but it will not be long until they start to cause trouble and wreck havoc on Coronation Street. Other plots that are set to be explored include a huge house fire that engulfs the street and a horrifying knife crime plot that affects everyone.

Coronation Street airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
