Country music sensation Michael English is not ruling out the possibility of appearing on Dancing with the Stars one day.

The singer and songwriter, who found fame immediately after leaving school as a young man thanks to his hit song The Nearest To Perfect, said he would "love to" take a twirl on the studio dancefloor in pursuit of the iconic Glitterball trophy.

Speaking to Martin King and Síomha Ní Ruairc on Ireland AM on Friday, the singer opened up about his love of entertainment and his family.

When asked if he would ever do DWTS, he hesitated due to his accomplishments in dance, but said ultimately he would be happy to try it out.

"It might be unfair," he said, citing that he has previous experience with dancing thanks to his career, however Martin said that plenty of people with experience have been on the show.

"I would love to, it's a brilliant and fantastic show," Michael said.

"Lots of people I used to dance against in competitions are now the professionals."

Speaking of his fondness for Strictly Come Dancing, he added: "I love anything to do with entertainment - music, singing, dancing."

"It's a great show, Strictly is fantastic."

Michael's mother sadly passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic, and Michael said she was proud of his successes.

"She came to all the shows. I was in Portugal last week and she would have been there. When mam was alive they came everywhere, mum and Dad."

"It was tough, it was really tough, but I have a great dad, great family, great sisters and my friends."

Casting is underway for the next DWTS series, though RTE have said that one particular group of people will not be considered for the show.

Boss Larry Bass has said that they have had "people giving out" after contestants have moved in to politics not long after their stint on the show.

He told the Irish Sun: “We have a lot of people giving out to us because Nina Carberry got elected to the European Parliament. But I’m not surprised she got elected because she threw her heart and soul into dancing."

“If Nina turns her attention to the brief she is now responsible for as well as she applied herself on DWTS, she will be a highly effective politician.”

He added that it is "easier to say no" to casting politicians in any upcoming series.

“The nature of the political cycle here is, people will possibly will use [DWTS] as a way of affecting the political outcome," he said.

“So understandably RTE have to tread a fine line as a national broadcaster, covering news and current affairs, as being seen as independent."

“RTE don’t want to be accused of affecting the body politic. That’s why it’s much easier for them to say no to any politicians rather than be accused of taking sides.”
