Country singer-songwriter Jordan Davis has cleared up his seemingly divisive comment on Hannah Brown's Instagram swimming pool picture.
The 36-year-old was chatting on the Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe podcast on Tuesday, when the host steered him towards the confessions segment.
Davis said he and The Bachelorette star had designed a social media teaser campaign to promote their collaboration on the music video for his track "Almost Maybes," and this involved interacting with each other's personal posts in the lead up to its release.
He later published not one but three fire emojis next to her photo, yet the resulting fan backlash came as a shock to him as he never intended to make out that he found her attractive.
He recalled: "We were like, teasing her being in the video. We posted a couple of mysterious photos—'Who is the girl that's in the video?' She had commented on a photo of mine and I was going to comment on a photo of hers.
"She had posted this photo of her, I don't know maybe it was in California, but she was in a pool and I thought... this is showing my lack of social awareness and how long I've been out of the game and on social media; I thought the photo was fire in my mind, all right?"
Adding some defensive context, Davis revealed he "always" goes for three emojis if he's going to bother sending any at all. So, remaining true to himself, he published three flames without realizing how it might come across to the watching world.
"I think she was naked [in the image]. It's just like she's in the water, maybe, I don't know. I guess we're going to find out after this but it was totally just me being an idiot and maybe not thinking, 'Oh somebody might take this different,' and I got absolutely roasted," he continued.
"Again, I'm not a great social media person, so I look at my Instagram and it's just notifications going crazy and I was like, 'Oh damn this worked! This is a great idea!' It was like everybody commenting on that and being like, 'You piece of s***! You have three kids, you have a wife...' So I called my manager and I'm like, 'We got a major problem here dude!"
Predictably, his manager broke the news to Davis that he'd made a major misstep.
Bristowe, who herself starred in The Bachelorette's eleventh season before winning Dancing with the Stars five years later in 2020, then asked her guest about his spouse Kristen O'Connor's reaction to the situation.
"She's like, 'Why would you do that?' and I was like, 'I thought that was a fire photo...'" he replied, to which O'Connor pointed out the connotations: "'No! That means you think think she's hot!'"
Davis then told a sympathetic Bristowe he'd been so long "out of the game" that he didn't even know he could've deleted the comment.
"I'm glad we cleared that up," she said.
