Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has released a statement giving more details about why the team decided to part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy. Dallas decided to move on from the veteran head coach early on Monday.
"Throughout Mike McCarthy's tenure here, including the last several weeks, I have been very complimentary of the job he has done. That has applied to our record over that time period, our team unity and culture, Mike's qualifications and track record of success, and on a personal level as a tremendous human being," said Cowboys Owner, President and General Manager Jerry Jones. "I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure.
Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team. These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of time and depth to cover."
"Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction. I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica and their family the best. They have been a wonderful part of our community here.
We will commence a search process immediately to hire the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys."
There had been a lot of speculation about what Dallas would do with McCarthy following another poor year. The Cowboys missed the playoffs and ended the 2024 season with a record of 7-10.
McCarthy had been the head coach of the Cowboys since the 2020 season. During that span, he led Dallas to the playoffs three times in five years.
The veteran leader went 1-3 in the postseason as head coach of the Cowboys, ultimately leading to his dismissal. In total, McCarthy tallied a record of 49-35 during his five seasons leading the organization.
Dallas will now go forward with their search to replace McCarthy. The Cowboys' leading job is among the toughest in all of sports, making it not for the faint of heart.
This organization desires winning above all else but it has been scarce in recent years. Dallas hasn't won a Super Bowl since 1996, a drought that has eaten at the team over time.
Whoever takes on this role will have a lot to deal with but the Cowboys still have a strong core in place. With quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and pass rusher Micah Parsons, Dallas has pieces to win.
It will be a long and very interesting offseason for the Cowboys and one that certainly won't lack drama.
