Fun Fact: The organizers of Friday night’s 2025 Critics Choice Awards are sometimes referred to by their complete name, the American-Canadian Critics Choice Association. Will the group be forced to change its name if Donald Trump realizes his dream of bringing Canada into the fold as the U.S.’ 51st state? It’s just one element of the current political landscape that Critics Choice Awards host Chelsea Handler may mine for entertainment during the ceremony.
This is Handler’s third stint as the event’s host, but perhaps the first time in such unique circumstances. Originally set for Jan. 12, the 2025 Critics Choice Awards show was delayed not once but twice out of deference to the devastating impact of the wildfires throughout Los Angeles County. The location remains the same, the Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Airport, but all signs point to a pared-down event, including the lack of a high-wattage red carpet. E! is airing the broadcast live beginning at 7 p.m. ET, but when the ceremony was postponed, the network also announced it would not be airing its traditional Live From the Red Carpet pre-show.
That means the best chance for fans to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars will be if they’re presenting or called to the stage to accept a trophy. Nominees include both Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti for HBO’s The Penguin, a show and performances that have drawn rhapsodic reviews from critics, as well as Adrien Brody, best actor nominee for The Brutalist, and Cynthia Erivo, who received a best actress nom for Wicked. Karla Sofía Gascón is also nominated in that latter category for her work in Emilia Pérez — her appearance is likely to draw scrutiny as she encounters backlash from a series of controversial social media posts from 2020 and 2021 (voting on the awards ended before the posts surfaced).
But The Substance star Demi Moore may be the best actress nominee to beat in that category — and if so, it sets up the Golden Globe best actress winner for excellent chances for the 2025 Academy Awards, taking place this year on March 2. A 2021 Hollywood Reporter story revealed that the Critics Choice Awards are a reliable predictor of the Academy Awards, with Critics Choice winners in the film categories aligning with Oscar winners 73 percent of the time. If that statistic holds, the 2025 Critics Choice Awards may become useful homework for office Oscar pools.
Here’s a look at all of the evening’s arrivals. The Hollywood Reporter will update this gallery throughout the night.
