Dad of Newborn Asks Wife Out on a Date, Then Remembers Crucial Detail

A first-time mom is going viral for capturing a classic new-parent slipup by accident on camera.

In the clip, Nikki Sipe is cooking up some homemade chicken noodle soup, documenting the clip for a vlog, as her husband, Ethan, casually floats the idea for a date night: "Do you want to go see a movie?".

"I turned around and said 'babe?' to give him a chance to think about it," Sipe told Newsweek. When the penny drops, Ethan admits sheepishly, "Oh yeah, we have a baby."

Sipe explained that she was confused at her husband's initial suggestion as she immediately thought about their baby, Casey, who was napping at the time. The 28-year-old told Newsweek that the couple used to go to the movies spontaneously all the time and knew Ethan wasn't thinking about the logistics of bringing a newborn baby along.

"I don't think he forgot we had a baby; I just think he was focused on date night. The baby had been sleeping for a while at that point and I think in those beginning months you're just running on whatever brain power you have, especially when it's your first," the mom of one said.

For first-time parents, adjusting to the new reality of having a baby can be disorientating. The sudden shift from pre-baby routines—like spontaneously going to the movies—to the round-the-clock care of a newborn can lead to moments of forgetfulness, as habits and instincts from their previous lifestyle momentarily surface.

"He wasn't thinking about how a movie theater probably wouldn't be the best choice for a newborn," Sipe added.

Since it was posted on October 22, Sipe's clip has garnered 4 million views and over 1,190 comments. Fellow parents chimed in with their experiences of being in the newborn phase. "I asked my husband to give our newborn a soother and he said 'who?'" one mom commented.

Another mom shared how she was heading out to the store and her husband wanted to go with her. "Had to remind him we had a sleeping infant just down the hall," she wrote.

Other parents shared their hacks that might actually mean the Sipes could bring Casey to the movies. "Trick is, feed them before the movie starts and then get them to sleep. We also played white noise in her ear the entire time," one wrote.

"There were so many people who related to this moment and also people giving their own experience on bringing their baby to the theater. It's good to know that moments like these are relatable to other parents," Sipe said.
