A dad offering to pay his daughter $500 on one condition was left stunned at the response she gave to his extraordinary proposition.
Taylor, who asked that her full name and her father's name be withheld from this story, told Newsweek she considers her dad to be her very best friend. "He is one of the greatest human beings I've ever met in my entire life," she said. "He's kind, generous and extremely funny!"
One thing they have never quite seen eye-to-eye on, however, is her fashion choices or, more specifically, her decision to wear hair extensions.
There is a huge level of demand for quality hair extensions in the U.S. Future Market Insights, a leading business intelligence and analysis firm, says that, in 2023, the country accounted for 27.7 percent of the market share of hair extensions.
The market is projected to get even bigger still, with the advisory and intelligence company Arizton predicting its value will grow from $2.79 billion in 2023 to $6.34 billion in 2029.
Taylor's dad is not convinced, though. "My dad doesn't like anything fake. He likes the more natural look," she said. Though her dad often tells Taylor she has ruined her hair and that it used to look great, she is not convinced he would ever be able to spot hair extensions.
In fact, his dislike runs so deep, he was even willing to part with cold hard cash over it. In a video posted to Taylor's TikTok, @diamondstodinos, he can be seen telling her: "pull those ugly things out and I'll pay you $500 cash."
Taylor said she was filming him because "he is funny and he is consistent." She said: "I've always posted the silly things he has said on my personal social-media channels, and he's always a favorite among my friends."
This isn't the first time her dad has made this kind of offer either. "He's probably said this to me 100 different times," Taylor said. "Also, he knows I don't get offended, and he knows I will always do what I want to do no matter what anyone says."
This time, however, he was left more than a little surprised by the response he got. Taylor told her father that she would have "lost on her investment" if she took the money as the extensions cost her $4,000.
Her dad appeared stunned at this price tag. "My God," he says, laughing. "That is flushing money down the toilet."
Taylor's father wasn't the only one stunned. "Who pays $4K for extensions," one viewer commented on the video. "I'm sure they're fine but 4k for hair is insane," another added.
Taylor took note of these responses but says that price tag isn't all that out of the ordinary. "People are mind-blown by the price, but those are not people who are experienced because this type of hair and length has been consistent for many years," she said. "This is on the more-expensive end—but I lived in Los Angeles for 15 years and, believe me, they can be double this price."
Many commenting seemed to agree with her dad's viewpoint on extensions, though. "He is in every way correct," one user said, with another adding: "He told no lies."
Again, Taylor said she isn't all that surprised and doesn't hold any ill-feeling to those who dislike extensions. "Most men, whether it's your father or your significant other, dislike things that aren't natural for their daughters, wives or girlfriends."
At the time of writing, Taylor's video has been watched more than 16.8 million times. She puts that down to the aforementioned debate and her dad's unique comic timing. "I think a lot of dads give their daughters a hard time for hair, makeup and clothes," she said. "Also, my dad is funny and our dynamic is funny. He's a hilarious guy."
