This Country star Daisy May Cooper has opened up about a heartbreaking struggle she faced as she tried to navigate her way through drama school, having battled addiction and family tragedy.

The 38-year-old left her family home in Cirencester, Gloucestershire to head to drama school at the famous Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). There she says she “felt poor” as she struggled to pay bills.

At one point, £3,000 short of her costs, Daisy’s parents had been forced to sell the family home after being made redundant. It led to Daisy and her mother taking jobs as cleaners.

Speaking to The Times, she said: “The difficulty was the loan didn't cover accommodation in London. That was the struggle.”

Having returned to the West Country after attending drama school, Daisy revealed her drinking had also got out of hand. She explained: "I went to rehab and I've been sober for a year and a half."

Daisy wrote and starred in This Country with her brother Charlie. The BAFTA award-winning series takes a humorous look at life in the Cotswolds countryside, following the day-to-day lives of two cousins in a mockumentary style.

After the series concluded in 2020, Daisy released Am I Being Unreasonable? in which she plays a mother stuck in a depressing marriage. She has now branched out and written a book, Hexy B****, examining the paranormal.

Daisy has spoken candidly about her belief in the paranormal. As a child, she says her mother Gillian would take them to psychic evenings after Daisy’s aunt Alison died in a car crash.

She explained: “My mum was desperate to prove Alison had gone somewhere and her life wasn't just meaningless, otherwise it's just awful. So as a kid I was dragged round to all these psychic evenings in seedy back rooms of pubs. There was always a raffle with really shit prizes, a box of Quality Street or a clothes horse.”

She says she would be left “angered” after her mum would rack up “massive phone bills” calling psychics advertised in magazines. Daisy’s mum however would be left “heartbroken” by the calls.

Daisy resumed filming for Am I Being Unreasonable? this summer after giving birth to her youngest son Benji in June. She has two other children from her marriage to ex-husband Will Weston.
