In 2014, childhood best friends Cathrine Saks and Barbara Potts burst onto the Danish fashion scene with a covetable collection of bold, maximalist and textured coats designed to cut through the cold and muted outerwear dominating the fashion zeitgeist at the time. Fast forward a decade and their beloved eponymous brand, Saks Potts, has announced its closure after “ten extraordinary years”.

The Copenhagen-based label announced the surprising news on November 26 via an Instagram post shared with their 239,000 followers. “Saks Potts, renowned for its unconventional designs, will close its doors in the Spring of 2025,” the statement began. “Concluding a decade as business owners with financial success and remarkable creative achievements, Cathrine and Barbara are exploring how to leverage their legacy in new career opportunities beyond Saks Potts, taking the time to consider new possibilities,” it continued.

“From the very beginning, we have strived to deliver what people didn’t expect, and this decision feels like staying true to exactly that.” The founders added a personal note: “When we started Saks Potts at just 19 and 20 years old, we never imagined the wild and extraordinary journey it would take on us. These 10 years have been the best, most fantastic and unforgettable years of our lives. They’ve truly shaped who we are—and now we’re excited and eager to see what our 30s hold!”

Unlike other independent brands who have bucked under the weight of financial pressure, Saks Potts acknowledged that the decision to wind down wasn’t due to monetary loss. In fact, the brand has consistently achieved a 25% annual growth with 2024 shaping up to be the brand’s strongest financial year in operation.

So why halt production on a winning streak? Once a pariah in the realm of Scandinavian minimalism, the label soon earned acolytes in droves after becoming a mainstay in the wardrobes of definitive cool girls through high-octane hues, flirty cuts and Y2K sensibilities.

Lily-Rose Depp regularly sports their knitted polos. Kylie Jenner lived in her striped button-down shirt all last summer. Bella Hadid brought their shearling-trimmed candy-coloured coats to the masses with her New York street style, as did Kendall Jenner for their metallic two-piece sets. Paloma Elsesser, Emily Weiss and Beyoncé have also bought into their vision for contemporary womenswear, too.

Earlier this year, the brand eschewed showing at Copenhagen Fashion Week for an intimate anniversary party hosted on the shores of Øresund at the Swiss Embassy in Denmark. Unbeknownst then, it was an unofficial au revoir to a community of adherents to who made the brand what it was; covetable, chic and a new classic.

The brand will not produce any further collections, making their Fall/Winter 2024 range, which was presented in the halls of their Bredgade boutique in January, their last.

“Both being creative people, we have always strived to continuously reinvent ourselves and deliver the unexpected,” the designers added. “Now, ten years into our journey, it felt like we could either shake everything up completely or we could turn the page, say a beautiful farewell to our business at a stage that felt like the highest point and start a new chapter of our lives,” they wrote.

It’s unclear what the future holds, but let it be paved with the optimism, joy and colour they brought to the world with their lauded designs. Saks Potts, forever!
