David Beckham's heartbreaking message after death of Manchester United legend

2 weeks ago 4

David Beckham has paid a touching tribute to Manchester United's long-serving receptionist Kath Phipps, who passed away aged 85, reflecting on the warmth and care she showed him and others at Old Trafford.

Beckham joined the outpouring of tributes from United stars past and present after the club announced her passing in an emotional statement on Thursday.

Having served the Red Devils since September 1968, Kath was much more than just a switchboard operator; becoming the heart of the training ground, she welcomed everyone with her vibrant cheerfulness.

In recognition of her dedication, Phipps was honoured with the Service to Football award by the League Managers' Association in 2022, reports the Mirror.

Beckham, like many others, was frequently greeted by her friendly face and, upon hearing of her death, Beckham expressed his heartfelt thoughts: "Forever in our hearts... The first and last face I would always see was Kath sat at reception at Old Trafford waiting to give me my tickets for the game, she was the heartbeat of Manchester United," he shared on Instagram.

"Everyone knew who Kath was and everyone adored her. I moved up to Manchester at 15 and Kath made a promise to my mum and dad 'I'll look after your boy for you don't you worry'. And from that first day till the last day I spent with her that's exactly what she did. Old Trafford will never be the same without your smile as we walk through those doors... We love you."

"If Kath ever had a bad day, she never brought it to work; her positive attitude helped set the mood for everyone entering the training ground, always ready to lend an ear and offer words of encouragement to anyone who needed them. Kath was a one-woman institution, whose memory will be cherished by everyone at the club who had the privilege of knowing her. We can't imagine the place without her. Rest in peace, Kath."

Wayne Rooney, a United icon, also paid tribute to Kath, stating: "The heart and soul of Manchester United. Everything what the club is about. A legend who will be greatly missed. Thanks for the memories Kathy. Thoughts with family and friends."
