The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is set to announce a reduction in flight arrivals at Washington Reagan National Airport to address safety concerns following January's deadly collision between a helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet that killed 67 people, according to an email obtained by Reuters.
The FAA informed airlines late Wednesday that the arrival rate would be decreased from a maximum of 28 to 26 per hour. This measure aims to reduce risk but will likely increase average delays from 40 minutes to 50 minutes.
According to Reuters, the email also mentioned that investigators from both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have voiced concerns for the tower personnel on duty, who are experiencing heightened stress while having a direct view of the ongoing accident recovery.
