Demi Moore called out an unnamed Hollywood critic in a powerful acceptance speech at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.
Moore, who won the Golden Globe for her lead role in Coralie Fargeat’s body horror film “The Substance,” appeared shocked by the win as she remarked on her decades-long acting career.
“And this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor,” noted Moore, whose only other major win was an honorary Independent Spirit Award for being part of an ensemble cast in the 2011 film “Margin Call.”
She then turned to a comment from a producer who told her 30 years ago that she was a mere “popcorn actress.”
“And at that time I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money but that I couldn’t be acknowledged. And I bought in and I believed that,” Moore said.
She continued, “And that corroded me over time to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete, maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do.”
After hitting what she described as a “low point” in her career, she found a “magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script” in “The Substance,” which has been celebrated for its commentary on aging and women’s bodies.
“The universe told me that you’re not done,” Moore said as she thanked Fargeat and her co-star Margaret Qualley.
She went on to thank “all of the people” who stood by her over the years and those who believed in her when she hadn’t believed in herself.

“In those moments, when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough or basically just not enough, I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick,’” Moore declared.
“And so today I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me, and for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong.”
