Actor Alan Rachins, best known for his roles on L.A. Law and Dharma & Greg, has died aged 82.
His wife, actress Joanna Frank, confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday, November 2.
The actor passed away in his sleep early on Saturday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, after previously experiencing heart failure.

Rachins was known for his role as Douglas Brackman Jr. in L.A. Law (1986), a role which he played for nearly a decade until the show ended in 1994.
he shared the screen L.A. Law with his wife Frank, who starred as his on-screen wife Sheila Brackman. They got married in 1978 after meeting at an acting class.
That wasn't the end of the family connection to the show, with the series having been created by his late brother, TV writer-producer Steven Bochco.

Rachins and Franks also played a married couple in the indie film Always (1985).
Rachins was recognised for his role on L.A. Law with both an Emmy and a Golden Globe in 1988, and though he did not win either individual awards, the show itself won four Emmy awards for the category of outstanding drama series in 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1991.
Rachins later pivoted to comedy, starring as the father of Dharma in the sitcom Dharma & Greg. Playing the role of the hippie father Lawrence "Larry" Finkelstein, he starred in almost all of the 200 episodes across the five seasons it rans from 1997 to 2002.

He also appeared in films such as Showgirls, Leave It to Beaver and Terminal Voyage, and shows such as Rizzoli & Isles, General Hospital, Grey's Anatomy and NCIS, that last of which was one of his last roles before his death.
He also dabbled in theatre, notably being one of the original cast member of Oh! Calcutta who disrobed for the role.
His last screen credit was in the 2023 short film The Lights Above.
He is survived by his wife, Frank and his son, Robert.
