‘Tis the season for Doctor Who‘s returned annual tradition of a Christmas special, and there’s an extra present under the tree this year… in the shape of an extra 15th Doctor.
The BBC and Disney just released the first trailer for “Joy to the World”, this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special. Penned by former showrunner–and scribe of last season’s best episode–Steven Moffat, the episode sees the Doctor run into the titular Joy (Nicola Coughlan) at a high-tech temporal hotel offering guests a chance to visit every Christmas ever through time-travel technology. But the real twist here is that, through presumably timey-wimey antics, the Doctor’s real foil this festive season is himself.
Aside from doubled-up antics, the trailer makes it seem like we’re going to get the Doctor making a very interesting examination of himself. Beyond the gags of the Doctor finding his own Doctor-ness extremely frustrating to deal with when he’s on the receiving end of it, “Joy to the World” looks like it’s going to explore the emotional fallout of the Doctor and Ruby parting ways at the end of last season, and more broadly, why the Doctor ends up pushing people in his life away all the time. Exactly what you need for Christmas viewing!
No doubt we’ll get a slightly cheerier rendition of that when “Joy to the World” hits Disney+ internationally, and the BBC in the UK and Ireland, on Christmas Day, December 25.
