Jeremy Clarkson left fans shocked and worried after he revealed a recent heart scare left him close to death.
In fact, if The Grand Tour presenter, 64, hadn't received medical attention when he did, his heart scare could have resulted in a fatal heart attack. And now, experts are warning fans against his rich diet that consisted of a heavy consumption of alcohol, smoking and red meat.
Jeremy had returned to his Cotswolds farm when he started to feel "clammy" , a tightness in his chest and pins and needles in his left arm. After undergoing surgery, doctors fitted a stent in his arteries to keep them open but warned him a fatal heart attack was "maybe" days away.
Jeremy has made no secret of the fact that he enjoys a glass of wine or two. But even by his standards, last year he admitted that he drinks "far too much wine" with his partner Lisa Hogan. He revealed that the pair "usually get through at least two bottles a night."
He told The Sunday Times that not drinking was similar to doing a handstand as it's "technically possible for a little while, but a week?" The NHS recommend people limit their alcohol consumption to six glasses of wine or points of beer a week. So by Jeremy's admission, he was consuming 70 units per week.
Scientists have linked excessive alcohol can permanently damage the liver, contribute to cancer and increase blood pressure. It also puts a strain on the heart muscle which can lead to cardiovascular disease, which increases the chances of a heart attack or a stroke. Another facet to his lifestyle that led to his heart scare was his yo-yo dieting. Early last year, he took matters into his own hands by taking Ozempic to lose weight.
He had described the drug as "genuinely incredible". In his Sunday Times column, he wrote: "I drink far too much wine, I eat far too many slabs of Cadbury's Fruit & Nut chocolate and I drink a litre of milk before going to bed every night. Unless there's a beer in the fridge. In which case I'll have that instead."
But after taking the fat busting injection, he said: "I can open the fridge, where there's half a chicken and a juicy bottle of rose, and I want neither. Of course, I'll have to insert some balance in the future, or I'll, you know, die. But for now it's tremendous."
However, early this year he admitted he "didn't lose weight on it" and was "just getting fatter." Another factor that has been linked to his blocked arteries is red meat. It has been claimed by experts that too much can raise the risk of heart disease. Although it's a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals, a large consumption has also been linked to bowel cancer.
Lastly, his smoking addiction had also deteriorated his lungs. However surprisingly, the nicotine gum he had replaced cigarettes with had played a part in increasing his blood pressure. Last year he said: "Six years ago I bit the bullet and replaced my 40-a-day habit with sheet after sheet of full-strength nicotine gum. And this week a doctor said it's causing a worrying rise in my blood pressure and that if I don't pack it in soon, I will suffer from an agonising and premature death."
