The Los Angeles Dodgers won the 2024 World Series pretty convincingly and pitcher Jack Flaherty was a key reason why.
After spending half a season in Los Angeles, Flaherty is a free agent and unlikely to re-sign with the Dodgers.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently predicted Flaherty to betray the Dodgers and sign a deal with the rival San Francisco Giants. Jon Heyman of the New York Post predicts Flaherty to sign for $80 million, but his real contract could reach nine figures.
"So, who's left that plausibly could make that much of an investment in the right-hander who had a remarkable bounce-back in 2024?" Miller wrote. "Perhaps the Giants, who missed out on Corbin Burnes and who made short-term, option-laden deals with both Snell and Matt Chapman last winter?
"They opened last season with a $208M payroll and they're only at $173M, even after the recent signing of Justin Verlander. That means they theoretically have more than enough room to make it happen, and a planned six-man rotation might be for the best for them, given Verlander's age and the fact that neither Kyle Harrison nor Jordan Hicks has ever logged 125 innings pitched in a season."
The Giants are likely the top suitor in the Flaherty sweepstakes because they were favored to land Corbin Burnes before Burnes bolted for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
San Francisco has the money to spend and it's reasonable to assume the front office is still trying to acquire a pitcher. While Flaherty isn't the talent level of Burnes, he'll likely sign for less than half the price.
